How to Unroot the Motorola Moto X Play

Perhaps you’re done playing with root and custom ROMs on your Motorola Moto X Play or perhaps you need to sell the device and get it back to stock? Regardless of the reason, it’s pretty easy to unroot your device and usually involves just flashing the stock firmware from the manufacturer onto the phone to get it back to an out-of-box state.

Some of the reasons for unrooting your Motorola Moto X Play are:

Sending in the device for warranty (most, but not all unrooting procedures reinstate the manufacturer warranty if you had one before rooting).

Starting over (simply undoing everything you did while rooted so you can have a clean slate to start over).

Fix any issues (Maybe rooting messed something up? No problem, unrooting will take care of it for you).

Ready to get started? Here’s how to unroot the Motorola Moto X Play:

I. Before You Begin

1. You should have rooted your device using our how to root the Motorola Moto X Play procedure.

2. This procedure should only work on Windows based PCs.

3. Ensure that Motorola USB drivers are installed on your PC. If they aren’t, install them first.

4. This should erase the data stored on your device. So backup anything that’s important for you.

5. This should only work for the XT1562 and XT1563 variants of the device.

2. Turn off your device.

3. Turn your device back on in bootloader mode. To do that, hold down Volume DOWN and Power buttons together for a few seconds.

4. Your device should now be in bootloader mode.

5. Plug in your device to your PC using a USB cable.

6. Launch a Command Prompt Window on your desktop by holding down Shift on your keyboard and right-clicking anywhere on the screen and selecting Open command window here.

7. Type in the following commands one by one into the Command Prompt Window and hit Enter. Make sure the file names match the files available on your desktop.

fastboot oem lock begin
fastboot flash partition gpt.bin
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img
fastboot flash logo logo.bin

Please help me out as my Phone is not starting. I have tried to flash both stock rom the one which is above & also the unofficial cm 12.1 version is working for me. 1. Hi Deepak,

We just added the commands for relocking the bootloader on the device. Please follow the procedure again and you should be unrooted and back to the stock.

Also, make sure that you get an OKAY message after entering each command in step-7.

      Thanks!

Hey each time i try and load another image i get something like “failed (remote failure)” or INFOPreflash validation failed (remote failure) How do i fix this??

          1. Kolby Angiolella

Yes i installed the drivers. I did not move the phone through the whole process. for the first few commands it worked fine and than i started to get the error

          2. Hi Kolby,

As you say the first few commands worked just fine, then I don’t see any issues with the attachment of your device to your PC. I think there must be an issue with your PC. Could you please turn off any anti-virus program on your PC and then do the procedure? That might be causing the issue.

Let us know how it goes for you. Thanks!

          3. Kolby Angiolella

Hey so i tried using a different computer, made sure it phone was in transfer mode, tried turning off my anit virus and it still does not work. it says the same thing. Also when im trying to load spase chunk it says invalid signed image. Help!

    Regards,

    1. Hi Ravi,

What did it say when you ran the “fastboot oem lock” command? Did it show something on your phone’s screen or did it say your bootloader was locked in the command prompt window?

      Let us know.

      Thanks!

Thanks for the great tutorial. Your rooting one was spot on, I am enjoying CM12 at present. That being said I think in the end, I would be happy with a rooted Stock rom over a complete overhaul. I am currently on step 7 and attempting to flash gpt.bin. “error: cannot load ‘gpt.bin’ ” is present, and I have run cmd elevated and regularly. I’m also in the Desktop directory when running these commands. I should note, I assumed to use the LUX_RETCA_5.1.1 version for my phone rom as I am in Canada and figured the RETLA was for Latin America. If anyone has tips, please feel free to post. Thanks again!

    1. Hi Ryan,

We’re glad you liked our tutorial!

We usually use pure unrooted stock ROMs for the unrooting procedures as you can always re-root your device using our root procedures.

As for the issue that you’re facing with the command, can you please see if the file that you’re entering the name for in the command prompt window is present on your desktop (Does “gpt.bin” file exist on your desktop?)?

Let us know so we can further assist you.

      Thanks Ryan for visiting us!

Also when doing the very first step “fastboot oem flash begin” I get the message Please fully flash the signed build before locking phone! OKAY [ 0.026s] Finished. Total time: 0.026s I just want my phone back to normal, should have never started the rooting BS!!!

  6. Hi! David Cogen and Mahesh Makvana, I am from México and I liked your tuturial, but I have a query, as I said I am from México so… Which Stock ROM for the XT1563 should I use?

  7. Hi! David Cogen and Mahesh Makvana, I am from México and I liked your tuturial, but I have a query, as I said I am from México so… Which Stock ROM for the XT1563 device should I use?

    1. Hi Ixa,

      Thanks for posting the question!

As for choosing a stock ROM that works in Mexico, what you can do is go to the stock ROM link and pick the one that describes your region/carrier. All of the ROMs listed on that link has all their detains in their names, so it’s easy for you to find a ROM for your particular region.

Let us know how that works for you!

  8. Hi Mahesh,

When I try to flash boot.img I get an error that says Preflash Validation Failed, do I have the wrong files? Recovery flashed OKAY, but the system.img files give the same error.
My phone reboots after about 1 minute 🙁

    1. Hi Kay,

The error message that you mention is usually generated by the system when you try to downgrade your device.

Please check the current software version of your device and then check the version of the software that you’re trying to flash on it and make sure you are not downgrading the device.

      Hope that helps!

      1. Hi Mahesh,
Thanks for your reply. I indeed tried to downgrade. For now my phone functions normal with CM12 installed. I’ll try to find a newer stock ROM.

    1. i am running cm 13 with android m……nd now i want to go back to stock rom.. if i go back in lolipop, will i able update it in androi m ?

on the command prompt it says bootloader locked but still on my phone it shows the unlock message

          1. Frankie Bellucci

Hello I too continue to have a locked bootloader.

            G:PHONEMOTO XMfastbootMfastboot>fastboot oem lock
            (bootloader) Phone is locked successfully!
            OKAY [ 1.947s]

            Bootloader shows:
Device is LOCKED Status Code: 2
            Software Status: Modified

Its now rebooted and to re-run any commands I’ll have to set the phone up again for usb debugs and bootloader stuffs. 🙂

          2. Frankie Bellucci

Thank you. Could you define soon please. Also, will I be notified somehow? 🙂

This site is great and I appreciate the work you’re doing here and you attention to the detail AND, timely responses. Gooooooood business.

          3. Frankie Bellucci

Mahesh. I’ve made some sort of mistake. I now have, what seems to be a bricked phone. I can boot to bootloader but all commands fail. If I perform fastboot devices, I get – ZY2235NZNF.
Beyond that, I get failures. first command – “fastboot oem lock begin”
(bootloader) Not supported command in current status!
            FAILED (remote failure)

I was indeed able to boot to the phone and was only having the issue of the unlocked message. Now… ~shame~ I do hope you have a solution.

  9. Hi, when i try to follow the commands above on the first command ‘Fastboot OEM lock begin’ i get a response saying ‘ Please flash valid signed images just after lock begin command! ‘. I can then flash all the commands properly but at the end it says something like failed to validate system image or something on the bootloader logs. I try to reboot and now seems that it goes from bootloader unlocked screen to erasing, and then just bootloops. What should i do? All the commands get a OKAY next to it. PLEASE HELP ASAP!!!

    1. Hi James,

It seems the first command went well for you and as for the subsequent commands, make sure you’re flashing all of the sparsechunk files on the device. The commands given in the above procedure are indicative and they vary with the different variants of the device.

Open the folder containing the stock ROM and make sure that all of the files in there have been flashed on your device using the command prompt window.

Let us know when you’ve done that. Thanks!

      1. Thanks Mahesh for that speedy response! Yes, ive now successfully flashed it. Its because I was missing the sparsechunk.8 file, and managed to do this time. BUT I still have same issue as some other people, it says bootloader unlocked when I boot up the phone, even though it said OEM lock thing was OK when flashing at end of CMD script. What should i do, as if i need to send this in Motorola will know ive unlocked device, please help asap 🙂

  10. hi this is peru. . I have XT1562 dual sim 16gb internal memory. . kindly suggest which file I need to download from Filefactory and install..

    1. Hi Peru,

You need to download the file that has your device’s model number in its name. You also need to make sure the file name has your region name (Europe or Asia or whatever it is).

      Hope it helps!

  11. i followed all commands and everthing done.. I try to reboot and now seems that it goes from bootloader unlocked screen to erasing, and then just bootloops… iam not able to turn off my device to goto bootloader.. what should i do.. ? thanks.

    1. Hi Dukkie,

Make sure you’ve flashed all of the files that are available in the stock ROM folder on your computer. The commands given above are indicative and they vary with the firmwares (especially the sparechunk command).

Read the James’s comment below as he got this to work successfully.

      Thanks!

  12. omg i just saw that i forgot to flash fsg, my phone is working fine , but the unlocked bootloader warning is still showing

  13. I was just gonna say! After completely remvoing root it still says system modiifed and staues code 3 on the fastboot screen. How do I remove that, so its back in warranty.

      1. Thanks for that quick response once again! But I mean is there a way to show that the phone hasn’t even been uncloed at all. As I need to send to motorola but they said it will cost money if the bootlaoder is unlocked. Hope that helps!

  14. HI
Im using a moto x play xt1562 I wanted to unroot it. I have followed all the steps and now it keeps saying warning bootloader unlocked with an androind saying erasing.its a loop and keeps going.Should i be worried

  15. yes it didn’t work out for me as well.
I did the procedure carefully but after that the warning comes and an erasing android sign that’s it.
I flashed a custom recovery and cm13 on it and boom my simcrds are not detecting.
please do something about it ASAP

    1. Hi Aarsh,

Make sure you’ve chosen the correct firmware for your device. Also, ensure that all of the files you extract from the firmware archive get flashed on your device. If you miss out even on a single file, the procedure will fail.

      Hope that helps!

      1. there are only 2 firmware for xt1562 v6.0 and v6.0.1
I tried flashing both of them.
        but no use.
i’m using xt1562 India model dual sim 32gb version.
I followed the commands given above carefully.
is there anything am I missing?

        1. Hi Aarsh,

I think you didn’t get what I said.

You need to ensure that ALL OF THE FILES you extract from the firmware archive get flashed on your device. The commands given in the procedure do not necessarily flash all the files (there’ll be some additional sparsechunk files in your firmware’s folder that you need to flash).

Please do that and let us know if it works for you.

          1. thank you 🙂
            it is working fine now
there were 9 sparsechunks but I was flashing only 7.

And this is the file I used for unroot—- XT1562_LUX_RETEU_6.0.1_MPD24.107-52_cid7_subsidy-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip

        1. Hi Rahul,

Did you flash all of the files that you extracted from the ROM archive? The commands above are indicative and there may be more or less files in the stock ROM archive that should be flashed on your device.

Ensure everything that you extract from the ROM archive gets flashed on your device. You should see your second SIM slot working then.

          Thanks!

          1. Yes I flash every file…I tried 4 time but not change
But can you tell me the main file for duel sim working…. I will try main file flash again…

      1. Hello,

My bootloader was unlocked and while going with this method the first command was executed but on second command it showed the preflash validation failed so after that when I started again the process the first command itself failed hence no further progress.

        1. Hi Achint,

It seems the bootloader re-locking process began but it never finished. So, what you can do is try unlocking the bootloader and then use this procedure to re-lock the bootloader. Also, you’re supposed to flash off all the files in the firmware folder on your device. The commands given in this guide are just indicative.

          Thanks!

          1. Hi Anirudh,

From what I can understand, you’re actually trying to downgrade your software which I think is not possible. What version of software were you running before and what version of software you’re trying to flash on your device? Make sure you aren’t downgrading or you’ll see the above errors.

            Thanks!

          2. Hi Anirudh,

Well, it’s not possible at the moment. What you can do though is download the latest version of the stock firmware for your device and get it flashed. That should help you unroot the phone without any issues.

            Thanks!

  22. @maheshhari:disqus I Am Getting preflash validation failed While Flashing Gpt.bin recently i downgraded to lolipop But That time Also i was receving this error but now Whenever i try to update to marshmallow i am receving this error and if i try to update to marshmallow from settings update section My Device Restart Then Stuck On recovery mode Please Help

  25. Hi Mahesh, I’m trying to install a stock rom on the Moto X Play XT1563, and it keeps showing “INFOPreflash validation failed FAILED (remote failure)” Do you have any ideas? Thanks.

Downloaded a few from here: github dot com/motoxplay/stock

    flash partition gpt.bin
    sending ‘partition’ (32 KB)… OKAY [ 0.007s]
    writing ‘partition’… INFOPreflash validation failed
    FAILED (remote failure)
    finished. total time: 0.465s

    Thanks.
