Motorola Droid Turbo Unboxing (Video)

New phone, new box to unbox. The Motorola Droid Turbo was just released today and I managed to grab one real quick so I can see if it’s all it’s cracked up to be. Before we get into all of that, though, let’s do a quick unboxing and spec walkthrough.

What It Comes With

Here’s the box and it’s quick to note that this is a Verizon exclusive on the side (probably why they didn’t mention the Nexus 6 too much when it was announced). Let’s remove the sleeve and pull off the top and inside we find the phone (which we’ll get to later).

Underneath that, we have our booklet with the things people like us just never read.

Then we have the Turbo charger as Motorola is calling it. This, in conjunction with the Turbo enabled device and non-removable 3900mah battery, is what enables the device to get an advertised 8 hours of talk time after just 15 mins on the charger.

On the back, we note a 0.5a standard input and three different outputs: the standard 5 volt/1.6 amp, a higher 9 volt/1.6 amp designated as Turbo 1 output, and an even higher 12 volt/1.2 amp that has the Turbo 2 output designation on it.

Pulling that up we have the standard micro-USB cable and that’s it.

Which brings us to the phone…

The Droid Turbo has a 5.2 inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2560×1440 or 2.5K or qHD (whatever you want to call it it’s some serious pixels).

To push all those pixels, the device has a 2.7Ghz, quad-core CPU, an Adreno 420 GPU, and 3GBs of RAM and surrounding the screen we have our 2MP front-facing camera at the top, the front facing mono speaker at the bottom along with our capacitive buttons (that again I can’t understand why they are still included on Android devices when it’s not necessary and everything can be done on the screen now, but there you go).

The device comes with either 32GBs or 64GBs of storage. The latter option requiring you to buy the “ballistic nylon” version while the former allows you to choose between the “metalized glass fiber” in black or in red (like I have here).

Also on the back of the device, we have the 21MP camera w/ dual LED flash that is also capable of shooting 4K video and 720P slow motion. It is also important to note as it might matter to some people, that the 21MP is only if shooting in 4:3 aspect ratio, if you switch to 16:9, it’ll be lowered to about 16MPs.

On the left side, we have, um, nothing and, on the right side, we have the power button and the volume rocker (which also doubles as sneaky hidden SIM card tray).

The device is running Android 4.4.4 (with Motorola stating an update to Android 5.0 is coming shortly after it’s release) and it is a pretty much stock, or pure as they call it, Android experience. This means no custom UI like TouchWiz, HTC Sense, etc. just stock Android with a few other apps and features added in here and there by Motorola.

Initial Impression

So initial impressions of the Motorola Droid Turbo… I love how snappy it is, which, is, of course, thanks to those processor, RAM, and the fact that it doesn’t have any custom UI sitting on top of Android like other manufacturers. It flies. The camera also seems awesome at first glance, with the shots being super crisp and thanks to the 2.0 aperture it has some nice depth of field action going on with slightly blurred backgrounds without the need of fancy software tricks.

The big thing about this phone is the battery and charger though and while I have yet to test either out, I can’t imagine it wouldn’t last at least all day with heavy use with a battery of that size.

My only surprise is the styling actually. I’m really interested to the see the ballistic nylon version as I’m not terribly excited about this kevlar look as it’s a lot shinier than I expected and just doesn’t look as nice as a Moto X for some reason, but that’s just my opinion, of course. Other than that, looks promising and with Android 5.0 on it supposedly shortly after that version of Android is released, it’s shaping up to be, at the very least, a device worthy of walking into a Verizon store to check out for yourself.

Review coming soon! Thanks for watching!
