Nokia 3310: The “Brick” Is Back

You guys wanted me to find it, so I did.

Go Look for the Nokia 3310

Nokia has relaunched their beloved Nokia 3310 circa 2000 and at that time it was known for battery life and the fact it could essentially be used to thrwat enemies, hammer in nails, basically whatever you wanted cause it would just never die. This, and its square-ish shape at the time earned it the nickname “the brick phone” and that’s about an accurate description.

Back here in 2017 however, it seems Nokia has decided to bring it back for an encore.

Let’s go through the specs.

  • Unlike the original, we have a 2MP rear camera.
  • No there is no front camera, because, selfies didn’t exist in 2000.
  • It weighs about 3oz and is absolutely tiny.
  • 2.4″ 240×320 resolutionnon-touchscreen display
  • The phone will last about a month on standby or 22 hours of talk time.
  • SNAKE (yes that is something that is mentioned as a feature on this phone)
  • It’ll cost around $50.SNAKE

The design is obviously minimalistic, with smoothed-out edges, a standard dial pad (which means texting will require using the old-school T9 method), a d-pad for navigating the menus, and that’s basically it. Oh, it comes in four colors, too! Ooooh, ahhhh.

So besides people feeling nostalgic, what place does a feature phone still have in 2017?

Well, for one thing, Africa just recently had a decline in smartphone sales while it’s feature phone sales went up by 30%, according to Wired. Which might make sense considering the need for longer battery life, and a priority on simply being able to make phone calls cheaply instead of, you know, tweeting.

It seems emerging markets are a big target for HMD, the new owners of the Nokia name. With the launch of the budget friendly Nokia 3, 5, and 6, they cover the mid-range to lower-end market pretty well and now, with the relaunch of the 3310, they cover the entry-level tier, too. Wonder when they’ll get ballsy and go after the high-end again?

Thoughts? Anyone want one just because they want to play snake again? Let me know what you think in the comments below, love to hear from you.
