What is Kodi? (& How to Install Kodi on the Amazon Fire TV) (Video)

Kodi, formerly known as XBMC, is a free and open source media center for playing videos, music, podcasts, photos, games, etc. on any number of devices. Beyond just playing back your own media over your wifi network though, it allows you to also grab content from third-party plugins to watch TV and movies from all over the web.

Now though, for those with a FireTV stick, there’s a way to load Kodi and its content sources directly on your TV as a native app. In this video, I’m going to show you what Kodi is exactly and how to install it.

Disclaimer: Kodi does not contain any content on its own, it is simply a media player. Using Kodi to watch or listen to any copyright protected content is illegal. I am not responsible for what content you use Kodi for. You assume all responsibility for what you do with it after you install it.

For this to work, you, of course, need a Fire TV or Fire Stick and need to make sure it is connected to a Wifi network with access to the internet. Once you have that, here’s how we install Kodi.

Adding Unsupported Add-Ons to Kodi

Kodi Add-Ons

Beyond the normal repository of content there are a ton of third-party content sources you can check out and install (like the popular Ares or Fusion add-ons) by Googling for Kodi add-ons and finding their source URL. You then add them to Kodi by doing the following.

Add a New Add-On Source

In order to get a new add-on, we first need to tell Kodi the source for where to grab it from.

  1. In the Kodi app, go to System > File Manager.
  2. Select Add Source.
  3. Select None.
  4. Type in the source URL (i.e. http://www.areswizard.co.uk for the Ares plugin or http://fusion.tvaddons.ag for Fusion) and click Done.
  5. Name it whatever you want and click OK.

Install the New Add-On

Once you have the source setup, the next step is to install the actual add-on from the source.

  1. In the Kodi app, go to System > Settings > Add-Ons.
  2. Select Install from Zip.
  3. Select the red folder that has the name of the add-on source you added earlier.
  4. Navigate to where the installation .zip file is and select it (i.e. Fusion is under “start here” then tap the hubwizard zip file and Ares is called script.areswizard and it’s usually right when you open the ares red folder).
  5. You’ll get a notification that it was installed at the bottom right of the screen.
  6. Then go to Programs on the Kodi home screen and you’ll see the Configuration Wizard or Installer there, select it.
  7. Follow the steps there to install it (i.e. for Fusion select Fire TV).
  8. Once done, you’ll see the new content within the Kodi app’s many sections.

There you go! Enjoy the new content and let me know in the comments below what you guys think of the app.
