How to Enable Remote Location on the OnePlus One

Let’s be honest, we’ve all lost our phone and half the time it’s hidden under a hoody.  But for those times when you genuinely left your phone in Starbucks you want a tool that can find your phone, lock your phone, and even remote wipe your info if you really really lost it.  On the OnePlus One you actually have two options for this.

The first option is Googles stock Android Device Manager system that allows you to perform all of these tasks via your Google Account associated with your phone.

The second option is via a CyanogenMod account as CyanogenMod has created their own system for device location and secure data wipes.

To allow Android Device Manager to access your phone:

1.  Tap on the App button (the one that looks like a circle with 3 smaller circles in it).

2.  Tap on Google Settings.

3.  Tap on Android Device Manager.

4.  Tap Remote locate this device.  Then Tap Allow remote lock and erase.

5.  You’ll get a pop up screen that asks you to allow Android Device Manager to erase all data and to change the screen-unlock password.  Click Activate.

You can now exit out of the menu’s and you’ll be able to find your phone or lock/erase data by going to https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager

As a back up method I recommend also configuring CyanogenMod’s ability to track and erase data.  To set this up

1.  Pull down the notification shade and tap the box icon in the upper right corner of your screen.

2.  Tap on the Settings Icon.

3.  Scroll down to and Tap on Add Account.

4.  Tap on CyanogenMod.

5.  If you don’t already have a CyanogenMod account tap New.  Otherwise Tap Existing.

6.  If you tapped on New you’ll get the create screen.  Create a user name and password here, accept the terms, and Tap Create.

7.  If you tapped Existing enter your user name and password.

You can now find the location of your phone by going to http://account.cyanogenmod.org.
