How to Turn Camera Roll Back On in iOS 8.1
For as long as many of us can remember the iPhone stored all of your pictures in one place and they decided to call it the “Camera Roll”. We’re all pretty sure that was a spin on the notion of a roll of film. However, Apple’s latest trend of disowning skeumorphic after labor day removed the Camera roll and replaced it with “Moments”, “Collections”, and “Years”. While these groupings are far more powerful and granular then a single place for all of your pictures that just endlessly scrolled, it left many wondering “Where’s my Camera Roll?”. Well iOS 8.1 brings the camera roll back. The only caveat is that you have to have iCloud Photo Library (Beta) turned off. If iCloud Photo Library (Beta) is turned on the Camera Roll will hide from you in a dark corner of your iPhone.
To Turn Camera Roll Back On:
1. Tap Settings.
2. Scroll down to and tap on Photo & Camera.
3. Make Sure iCloud Photo Library (Beta) is turned off. As long as you’re on 8.1 and this is turned off you should see a Camera Roll.
4. To find your Camera Roll go into the Photo App.
5. Tap on Albums.
You should now see the Camera Roll. Welcome back to the singular place for all of your pictures. For me it’s a large reminder that I have over 2,000 pictures sitting on my phone that I haven’t deleted and maybe/hopefully synced and backed up to my computer.
So what do you think? Leave a comment and let us know if you really care about the “Camera Roll” or if you prefer the new “Moment”, “Collection”,”Year” views.
This is very helpful. I could not find my camera roll and even Apple support did not realize that the reason was that the beta was turned on. However, when I tried to turn off the beta, I was presented with a series of options on the iPhone that seemed to suggest I might be deleting my pictures. I spoke to Apple support and they said that, yes, I really WOULD lose access to downloading the photos if I turned off the beta. It was suggested that I email the images to myself before I turned off the beta. HOWEVER, I figured out a work-around. I have Dropbox on my iPhone and I was able to upload all of my images to Dropbox and then access them on my computer via the Dropbox app. What a relief! Now I can turn off the beta and get back to business.
