I have a MyTouch original and I will comment on here if I see any major different when I get the update. Also please tell us when you get the update and where you are located at.
This is huge, we have waited for MONTHS, almost a year for an update!! I will still be switching to the iphone shortly, but this will help ease the pain of leaving android. Once you go Mac you never go back!
Will they have an update for the mytouch 3.5mm jack
@ Ryan
The 2.2 update is only for the original. I’m sure the MyTouch Fender/3.5mm jack will get it soon.
@ Mike & Luis
Your phone has to be unrooted in order to get this update. You might not get the update right away because they are releasing the update in small batches around the US and it may take up to the 25th to get to your area. I live in FL and whenever I get the update I will post something on here.
if it is rooted will it get the update?
can i unroot my fone and get the update?
What if im rooted but i only have the superuser permision thing on my phone. I have not tried to flash a custom recovery or boot any roms. I am just on original 1.6. Do i still need to unroot?
If you are fully rooted (like the method described on this site where u go back to 1.5, flash the recovery, etc….) then no, because you probably installed a custom rom (even if it is a ‘clean’ version) and will not allow an OTA update.
If you used Universal Androot or similar and didn’t modify your bootloader, recovery… then you should still be able to get the OTA, but I think it will unroot you.
Please correct me if I’m wrong tho.
As for me, I flashed back to 1.5 using the SAPPIMG.nbh but have not received anything not even 1.6 yet, I don’t know if it will go straight to 2.2 and skip 1.6 or not.
Ya i used the oneclick method but did Not change the bootloader or flash anything. am i fine with this.or will i have to unroot. i am on regular 1.6
You’re fine, it’ll update regardless.
Thank you just making sure. And i love your website. It is very helpful. Keep up the good work
Will i still be able to get the update if im running 1.5?
I just unrooted my mytouch…
?
I unrooted and i’m still at 1.5 i’m trying to get to 1.6 because i think you need to be at 1.6 with the 2.23 radio.img to get the ota. T-mobile canceled the 1.6 ota
so i’m hoping i get the 2.2 ota. tomorrow i’m going to call t-mobile.
i Live in Fontana,CA so if i get it i will let you guys know!
If you unrooted back to the 1.5 and would like to get to the 1.6 Update then simply go to this site to manualy upgrade http://theandroidsite.com/2009/10/02/didnt-get-your-donut-1-6-update-yet-heres-how-to-manually-update/ as for you craig…once again great job
I’m getting reports left and right (even from T-Mobile) that you don’t need to be on Android’s 1.6 OS to get the update. You just have to be unrooted and when the update hits your area you will should be able to get the update.
This is a super slow release so don’t worry if it takes a week or so for the update to hit your area because it should be across America by Oct 25th.
So if my area gets the update BEFORE I unroot my phone, am I screwed? How does this work?
No your not screwed if that happens. Its kinda like your if you unrooted your phone before they canceled the 1.6 update. You would just unroot and wait between then and a week later and get the update.
You do not have to be on the 1.6 to get it. The update looks for your model number not your OS version.
Aright. Thanks, Craig. Sounds good to me. I will unroot just as soon as someone around here gets it. haha.
I am stoked beyond belief. Come on Wisconsin!!! haha, i tap my foot all through class every day waiting for this, I thought they were gonna forget us with all the hspa+ stuff going on. Thanks T-mobile!
Anybody know if anyone has gotten the update yet? i unrooted my phone to get the full update through android.. im pumped!!
I asked one of my friends that works in t-mobile and they said they are sending it in waves. I’m still waiting on the thing to hit FL.
I heard a rumor they are extending it out to be across America by the 31 of this month.
Any Word On Swype With The Update?
Just received a message from T-mobile, did anyone else?
“Free T-Mobile MSG: Over the next two weeks, a 2 part Froyo Android OS upgrade will be sent to your MyTouch 3G. Details: [Link]”
SO EXITED!
I just got the first part of the update for the MyTouch original 2.2 update. So if you live in Florida look out for it
For anyone thats thinking about unrooting their phone to get the update don’t. The update is almost the exact same thing as the 2.2 ROMS but with less features. Along with that I was able to get the update but I’m hearing a lot of people that has 1.5 can’t get the update. Also If you want to try the update without rooting your phone then go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814142
You still have to root your phone to do this, don’t you? Cant just flash a rom onto a phone without rooting it first. At least, not that I know. But then again, I don’t really know s%^t about this stuff. Just assuming from previous experience and from what I’ve read.
No you don’t need root for this. This update is the official update from T-Mobile, just wait and it’ll appear on your phone automatically (so long as you have a data plan).
You only need to root to flash NON-official updates (updates created by developers etc. T-Mobile’s official updates come to the phone automatically).
Oh no, I’m sorry. I was talking about the link Craig Bennett posted to update your phone manually. He said you can do it without rooting your phone, but it is a rom created by an independent developer FROM the official update, so your phone would still need to be rooted.
So if you already have your phone rooted but want kind of a spiffier version of the official update, you can just flash the rom posted here ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814142 ) over whatever rom you are running.
Got it, sorry didn’t see the link!
so i got the first part of the update it went fine, then got the second part and it aborted half way through updating…anyone know why??…im kinda pissed
From what t-mobile’s web site says, your phone either needs to have a full battery or plugged in. It probably just eats up your battery while it’s loading everything. Did you have it plugged in for the second portion of the update? The battery could have died and stopped it.. Just a suggestion, not positive on this.
battery was fully charged and plugged in it just stopped in the middle of the second updating i heard it was cause im on 1.5 and not 1.6 but i cant seem to update to 1.6 so idk
Yeah. Screw it. Probably just better off rooting your phone and flashing a random rom.
Why should I switch from my rooted 2.2 to Tmobile’s update? What are the advantages?
You shouldn’t 🙂
Custom roms are always better than originals in my opinion.
Im on 1.5 and got the free text message from tmobile about the update… im in tennessee and still waiting for the update
@Luis
They stop releasing the 1.6 update a while back so you wont be able to get that. Its iffy if you will be able to get 2.2.1 with a 1.5 phone because some people was able to get the full update and others wasn’t able to fully install the update.
@ Mohammed
I was about to successfully get the 2.2.1 update on my phone but after a few hours of using it, I just rooted my phone again. There is less advantage to having an unrooted phone like its super slow even with the 2.2.1.
If anyone doesn’t believe me that the 2.2.1 is slower than having your phone rooted try running Pandora on the edge. When I did the thing had to buffer constantly. Along with that try, the benchmark if you’re not rooted and on 2.2.1 and compare it to a rooted phone.
My rooted original mytouch is kinda slow. Could it be my 4gb sd card? It constantly freezes. What do you suggest I do? I especially have this problem when using google nav.
I unrooted my phone out of sheer panic that I wouldn’t receive the OTA update. I used the Unlockr method and now I am stuck on the 1.5 version. Will I need to manually install the 1.6 updates? Or should I just wait it out? I live in South Texas, so maybe that’s why I haven’t received the update yet. I did receive the text from T-mobile.
Some advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
@Mohammed
Its possible its your SD card and you can test it by just clearing your SD card and seeing what happens or getting a higher class. Its more likely the problem is coming from your ROM. What ROM are you using?
@Steven
T-Mobile stop releasing the 1.6 update and its a iffy on if the 2.2.1 update will even work on your phone. A few people including myself was able to jump from 1.5 to 2.2.1 but the majority of people that was on the 1.5 couldn’t jump to the new update. I looked around for a how to manually upgrade your MyTouch to 1.6 but I couldn’t find anything that worked on my phone.
When I had my phone updated it was kinda slower then a rooted phone and obviously had less features. If you want to root your phone you can try out the update in a ROM. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814142
The ROM is a mix between the CM6 and the 2.2.1. The only bad thing about this ROM is it doesn’t have live wallpaper and whats listed in the Known Issues.
Ill say it again, never unroot your phone unless you are sending it in for warranty. Otherwise their is no reason to unroot lol
Ok with that out of the way, just Google “1.6 update.zip for mytouch” just make sure its the official update and its for the mytouch you have (3.5mm version or original). Put it on your sd card, then boot into recovery, wipe data and flash update.zip
Good luck!
Yeah, wish I would have known unrooting was going to be this big of a hassle. I mean, it’s not difficult, just more of a pain in the butt. So unless you’re prepared to do a lot of downloading, and rebooting, and flashing, and blah blah blah, stick to whatever rom you’re running now. I doubt froyo is really worth it.
Wonder when this is coming to colorado, I unrooted my phone, 2.1 ROM Was actually slower then my old “official” 1.6. =/ now I’m stuck with 1.5 until I get 2.2
Follow this forum to get back to the official 1.6. Your phone will not update to 2.2 if you are running 1.5.
http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/Operating-System-Software/myTouch-3G-Updated-guide-to-unrooting-installing-Donut-and-Froyo/td-p/505421
FYI: When you rename your file, MAKE SURE YOUR FILE NAME IS “UPDATE.ZIP”, NOT “UPDATE.ZIP.ZIP.” Versions of windows adds .ZIP to the file name automatically. So you may only need to rename it to “update” To check the file name, right click the file, then click on “properties” and click on “details.” Next to “Name” it’s say “update.zip” or “update.zip.zip”
Im I to understand, if you have the myTouch 3.5mm jack I will not be getting the upgrade to 2.2?
You will not be receiving THIS particular upgrade. But an upgrade will come to 3.5mm users in due time. But, you can always flash a rom. haha.
For all the mytouch 3g 3.5mm people. I have just spoken to a htc represenative on the phone and she said that she did not know when the update for the 3.5 would come out but she does know that htc is going to try to update all of there phone models that are on the old 1.6 firmware to the new 2.2 firmwaee vy the end of 2010. Thst is all i know.
Do you know how i can actually get the live wallpapers? None actually came with the update, so do i just have to get them off the market?
Oh, and I’m disappointed with the browser, them taking away the “zoom way out and drag to where you want to zoom in” thing, that’s kinda lame, on top of that, i downloaded a live wallpaper and “live wallpapers” still didn’t show up within the “wallpaper” option. I like the new home screens, and the gallery is super nice, but it takes a bit to load. overall appearance: 9 overall functionality: eh
