All US Android Phones to Get Android 2.1?

So according to some sources at AndroidandMe, all US Android devices will be getting an upgrade to Android 2.1 this year. This is in contrast to what was previously thought about how older phones couldn’t handle Android 2.1 (which we’ve seen to not be true already because of custom Android 2.1 ROMs being loaded onto G1s etc.).

There is something about this though that I find odd. Android 2.1 can’t just be loaded on all of these devices as it is. The carriers have to add their own proprietary apps into the OS, manufacturers have to load their custom user interfaces on top of the OS (like Sense UI and Blur UI), etc. So I find it very unlikely that all of these manufacturers, carriers, and Google are planning to release all of these things together at the same time…

So while Android 2.1 might be on its way to US Android phones, I have a feeling that depending on your phone, it could be at very different times during the year.

Whose ready for 2.1 already?

  1. What do you mean “Whose ready for 2.1 already?”?

    I am 🙂

But seriously, do you have any clues when should we expect the updates to start rolling out?

  2. i bought a g1 .and i send it to my father in africa .now the phone is block and he was asking for my google account and password to open the phone.we did everything but he still not get it. is any other way you can tell me so that we can activat it.

    1. Lumen,

He needs a data plan. Then login.
If the phone was unlocked you need him to put in the new APN settings (the internet settings from his carrier in Africa) before it will get internet.
Ask him if there is a G, E, 3G, or H to the left of his bars, if not then he doesn’t have internet access.
      Good luck!

  3. hi TheUnlockr,
i have question similar to lumen. i send my G1 to bro in India. i unlocked it rooted it and load dwang 1.17.1 on it. The phone runs so perfect.

But he can’t log in to the Gmail account not through market or the initial setup process. He is using WiFi for the internet. He can browse internet in the phone over wifi but cant log into gmail.

wht could be the solution for that?
