How To: Get Froyo for Rooted Nexus One Users

So Google has gone ahead and released the Froyo update for non rooted Nexus One users and well Paul from Modaco has made a quick rooted version for the rest of us rooted users 🙂

To install simply do the following:

I. Before You Begin

1. This ONLY works on Rooted Nexus Ones with Custom Recover Images.

2. THIS IS A BASIC FROYO ROM WITH ROOT ACCESS! This is for people who want to play with Froyo and are impatient. After this Cyanogen and other developers will make a full fledged Froyo ROM with other tweaks so feel free to flash this now and a real custom ROM will come later.

II. How To Flash Froyo on a Rooted Phone

1. Download the update

Froyo for Rooted Users

2. Save it to the root of your SD card (not in any folders, just on the SD card itself).

3. Turn off your phone then turn it back on by holding down power and volume down until the skateboarding androids come up.

4. Then hit volume down to highlight recovery. Then hit power to select it.

5. In the custom recovery screen, select Wipe Data / Factory Reset (yes a wipe is required).

6. Select Flash .zip using the trackball and wait for it to flash. Then reboot.

Enjoy!

UPDATE (05/23/10): III. How To Setup Flash 10.1 on Froyo

1. In your Froyo phone’s browser, head to the Play Store and search for Flash Player.

2. Then follow the steps to install.

Done!

  1. this is the “stock” froyo that was pulled? Nothing added? just froyo in it’s google intended glory? I was lurking around the xda forums and did quite a bit of reading, I was lead here and wanted to be sure!

    1. Hyoo82,

Correct, its just a full Froyo ROM that can be flashed by custom recovery. Only thing added is superuser (so you can use rooted apps still).
I’m using it right now, runs great 🙂

  2. Unlockr,
I tried to flash this but it won’t let me. Do I need to rename it update.zip or leave it as is?

    1. Josh,

If you have a rooted phone with a custom recovery image then you can use Nandroid inside recovery mode to make a backup of your phone in case something goes wrong.
Click on backup in your recovery image and it does the rest.

Good work Paul. Have yet to play with it, however I am stoked about the hard work you and all of the team are doing. Keep it up. Android users rejoice.

  4. “Google has gone ahead and released the Froyo update for non rooted Nexus One users”

Have they? I have a regular non-rooted Nexus One running 2.1 and there’s no system update available as yet.

  5. Anybody else this problem?

    E;Can’t open /cache/recovery/command
    –Install from sdcard…
    Finding update package…
    Openeing update package…
    Verifying update package…
    E:Signature verification failed

    1. Alexolma,

Redownload the file and make sure you download it on a computer then transfer it to your sd card of your phone (not in any folders etc). That error happens for a few reasons but one reason is that the file you downloaded got corrupted during download.
      Good luck!

  6. Actually, I’ve found it’s more common that the file gets corrupted when pushing it to the device. If you run the adb push command, and then try to flash the zip right away, it will often try to unzip the file before it’s actually finished writing it to the sdcard. One trick is to run “adb shell sync” after pushing, as that will only return when all the I/O operations are complete. So wait until that command returns before trying to flash the zip. Might not be what’s happening, but it might be, so it’s worth a shot.

  7. @TheUnlocker I get the same error, but the files i’ve downloaded several times is not corrupted.. the name is update.zip and not .zip.zip.. I tried under linux and Windows machine and I just get this error.

Have any ideas How I can solve this?

    Thank you.

  8. Froyo is running great, just that I can’t install the keyboard by Jonas. Oh and you can also download adobe flash from the market! 🙂

  9. Andre A. Shorter

@ unlockr, if it weren’t for you, i wouldn’t have even considered unrooting my nexus one. your step by step videos are bar none the best and i’d like to thank you again. as for the froyo update, i successfully flashed it onto my phone and everything was working fine for about 12 hrs but now my wifi quit working and i can’t get it to work on any of my other roms i use. i haven’t done anything w/ the radio so i don’t know what to do. can you give me some insight?

  10. I installed the update and it works great except that I guess there are a number of apps that are google protected that wont show up in the market. I am a newbie to rooting but does this have someting to do with the fingerprint of my phone. What can I do to get these apps to show up in the market so I can use them again. One of which is a calendar widget I need for work. Any suggestions?

    1. Steve,

If they aren’t in the market its because the developer needs to set their app to be allowed for 2.2. They’ll all do it in time. Just give it a few days and see if it shows up.

  11. how can i go back to 2.1?? i have the pre rooted 2.2 but with the radio update can u show me by video or guied please!!! i want to actual go back to cm roms and i need to downgrade my radio???

  12. I bought a Nexus One recently in order to get the 2.2 Froyo OTA update. I just realized that the phone has been rooted and is running what seems to be a stock 2.1 rom. Can someone give me a good resource or directions on how I can get on Cyanogen without bricking my phone? Let me know, thanks

  13. can some tell me what is rooted and no rooted?i have nexus one directly bought from GOOGLE…is it rooted or non rooted?

  14. Mister_Inveigler

I just tried this, an my Nexus didn’t sync my apps and settings with the Google Cloud, leaving me with pretty much nothing on my phone.
When I went back to MoDaCo Enhanced, all my apps and settings were downloaded from the Cloud.

I’m a little confused, is that supposed to happen? 🙂
Is it possible to back up my settings and apps and then apply them to a new ROM? (save settings and apps from MoDaCo and then apply them to Froyo for instance)

    Thanks!

  15. @ Unlockr

I was given a rooted nexus but it has the standard ROM on it that originally can with the phone. no custom nothing. it is running the 2.1update-1 with ERE27. I really new to the android system. how would i go about getting froyo on my phone?? any help would be great. thanks

  16. I have a basic rooted nexus one no special rom or custom recovery image just root access on 2.1update1 ere27 (with help from your site!). Ive tried many different packages and installs and none seem to work, they all error out with:
    E;Can’t open /cache/recovery/command
    –Install from sdcard…
    Finding update package…
    Openeing update package…
    Verifying update package…
    E:Signature verification failed

or something to that effect. Add i believe it is because I do not have a custom recovery image, but i’m not 100% sure. I am just wondering if there will be a “how-to” and download package to put 2.2 on the nexus even if you don’t have a custom recovery image??

    1. Mole2448,

This is for T-Mobile Nexus Ones is why 🙂
Just go to our ROM section for the Nexus One and load a Froyo Nexus One ROM. (This procedure was only for the original leaked Froyo ROMs, now there are custom ones you can just flash like normal).

      Good luck!

      1. Unlockr,
I will give that a try and reply again if it worked or didn’t work. Or if I had to do anything special that could somehow help other root users…
        Thanks

        1. Unlockr,
You were right! I installed a custom recovery image and then a ROM from your downloads and my T-Mobile Nexus One is running Android 2.2!! Thanks again Unlockr!

  17. So so so so much thanks.

i’ve been trying to update 2.2 to my phone over a month with a correct update method. i’ve done nothing to my phone, just bought and tried to update. it was installed with cyanogen mod 1.0.7 when it first came. i couldn’t find a simple update method.

i downloaded the file given in the link above, than named it update.zip and followed the steps, except wiping. 🙂 it worked fine. now i’ll make the second update given in the link frf50 to frf72.

thanks again for your info. 🙂

  18. I downloaded the file, followed the steps but after selecting Recovery, the phone goes into a black screen with the android and a “!”. The only way out of that mode is to pull the battery. What’s going on with this Nexus? Thanks.
