Motorola Atrix Unlocked Bootloader Coming Soon?

It’s good to be a developer these days now that mobile device manufacturers seem to be playing nice in the sandbox. XDA developer forum noticed in the latest Atrix update meant for Hong Kong and Taiwan devices, the  bootloader appears to be unlockable by using the traditional command “fastboot oem unlock”

Hints that the bootloader could be unlocked were spotted by a developer in recent Motorola support threads. This prompted the developer to poke around in the ascii and hex of several recent (Hong Kong and Taiwan versions) Atrix bootloaders. The poking around paid off with this discovery:

$ strings CG42.img | grep INFO … INFOUnlocking your device can permanently VOID your warranty. INFOThis process cannot be reversed. If you wish to proceed, INFOreissue the unlock OEM command containing the unique ID INFOof your device:

This could change the playing field significantly for Android developers if the unlocked Atrix Bootloader becomes available in a future update. The potential for a fully customizable experience, via Cynanogen Mod could be in the near future. For now, we’ll wait in hopeful suspense with the rest of the developer community.
