Android App Review: VPN One Click

It’s safe to say you will probably access the internet at least once, or maybe you sit on the internet all day long. Factor in mobile technology and consumers are hitting the web at an all time high right from their smartphones. What most consumers aren’t aware of is the fact that broadband connection data is recorded and stored for a minimum of five years by Internet Service Providers (ISP) for legal reasons. Additionally, communication done on the internet like chat or email can be intercepted and removed right from the infrastructure of your ISP. For these reasons, some consumers might search out a solution to help increase their privacy and online identity while using the internet. We sought out an Android app called VPN One Click to see if it did just that.

App Overview

VPN One Click protects a user’s identity and privacy while using the internet. The app enables the user the ability to avoids the interception of all Internet communications, not just while surfing the web. Additionally, the user is able to unlock sites otherwise blocked like Facebook, Skype, Twitter, and Youtube. This is done by connecting to a Virtual Private Network Server (VPN).

VPN Defined

A virtual private network (VPN) is a secure network that utilizes public telecommunication infrastructures, like the Internet, to provide remote offices or traveling users an access to a central organizational network.

Pros

  • Enables the user the ability to navigate and communicate anonymously with any other Internet application including: email, web, and VoIP
  • Encrypts all of the user’s Internet Communication using PPTP protocol at 128 bit or L2tp/Ipsec 256 bit
  • User’s real IP Address is hidden and protected
  • Servers are located all over the world including: USA, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom,Germany, France, Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Singapore and India
  • Customized security options: every time a connection is made the server changes, or user can maintain same IP

Cons

  • Had to have Wi-Fi on while using the app, if switched to 3G app would lose connection
  • When attempting to connect through various countries the app would force close several times
  • Significant battery drain to device while app was running
  • Poorly designed user interface
  • No in-app tutorial for anyone new to using a VPN app
Features
Subscription Info: Opens up a web page made by the developers which further explains what services the app provides
Elite Subscription: Option for either 3 months of 1 year. I thought the placement of the paid subscription options were ill placed as I had just opened the app and was still trying to familiarize myself with the app’s features. 3 Month subscription is priced at $2.99 while 1 year costs $8.99. There is no additional information to educate the user on why they should purchase either subscription as both options just open up a PayPal payment page. Apparently, the 3 day free trial is enough time for the user to decide if the service is worth paying for.
Connect Random: App chooses a random country to connect to
Specific Countries: User has option to connect to a specific country including: USA, Canada, Australia, UK, Germany, France, Netherlands, Swiss, Italy, India, and Singapore
Support: Opens a web page that a user can live chat to an help agent
Disconnect: Disconnect any active VPN
Check IP Address: Check what current IP Address is
Social: Facebook Like, or follow app developer on Twitter or refer app to a friend via e-mail
Conclusion:
If free trials were the equivalent to a first impression, overall I wasn’t impressed and was left feeling rather ambiguous about this app. If you’re main concern is hiding your IP address while accessing the internet on your smartphone, then this app provides that basic feature. However, if forced closes, significant battery drain, and a lackluster UI doesn’t sound appealing to you, then I wouldn’t suggest paying for a subscription after the free trial runs out. As an alternative, Tigervpns VPN client offers the same service with a more robust UI and the developer support is inherent on how smoothly their application works.

  1. Tested the Tigervpns VPN client, I would get 500 MB before installing, after installing the trial I got only 100 MB. VPN server slow and lagging. Even closing the program took forever to closed. I had to restart my phone to stopped the program. After trying for just 3 minutes I could not stand the program I uninstall it. The reviewer certainly bias against vpn1click. The Tigervpns VPN client Privacy Policy inconclusive detail privacy policies makes me wonder if I could trust Tigervpns VPN client and the people behind this program.
