How to Root the Dell Streak 5 with Android 2.2.1 on Rogers Canada

The Dell Streak 5 has been around for a long time now and has seen itself through various iterations of Android, starting with Donut 1.6 to Froyo 2.2 currently.  This guide will show you how to root this device running Android 2.2.1 and give it the freedom needed to use root-requiring applications and then go on to install ClockworkMod Recovery and custom ROMs.

I.  Before You Begin

1.  Uninstall/disable any antivirus that you installed as this will flag some SuperOneClick files are viruses.

2.  Uninstall delete any previous drivers you have for any other mobile device on your Windows PC.

3.  Download SuperOneClick 1.5.5 (there are recent versions but this is the only version currently known to work for the Rogers version of the Dell Streak 5 running 2.2.1).

II.  Rooting the Dell Streak 5

1.  Power off your Dell Streak 5 and remove the battery from the device.

2.  Make sure that you are logged on to your Windows computer as an administrator.

3.  Extract the SuperOneClickv1.5.5-ShortFuse.rar to a folder on your Windows desktop using Winrar or any other zip file application.

4.  Run SuperOneClick.exe.

5.  Put the battery back into your Dell Streak 5 and power it on.

6.  Unmount your SD card.  To do this, go to Settings > SD Card and phone storage and then click on Unmount SD Card.

7.  Enable USB Debugging on your device.  You can do this by heading to Settings > Applications > USB Debugging and checking the tickbox next to it.

8.  Connect your device to the computer using your microUSB cable.

9.  Click on Root in the SuperOneClick app.

This should root your Dell Streak 5 easily.  If you do get stuck with a “Waiting for device” message, turn off USB Debugging when connected and turn it on again.

The SuperOneClick solution has been developed by CLShortFuse and is a widely used tool which has helped many people liberate their Android devices; if you are one of them, a thanks or a donation to him will not go amiss!

  1. I couldn’t get it to work. Even after I turned USB debugging on and off. SuperOneClick continues to wait for device.

    1. Make sure that the cable you used to connect the device to your PC isn’t loose and is working and then try again.
