Android App of the Day: Zedge

We use our smartphones all throughout the day to do practical things like make calls, write emails, and look up directions. Despite all the functional uses our smartphones represent to us it can’t hurt to liven things up once in a while with the help of cool wallpapers, ringtones, and notifications sounds. You might think that your device is already sporting some serious customization, but maybe you have someone in your life that doesn’t know a thing about a smartphone’s true potential and needs you to help them out. With the Zedge app for Android, users have access to a vast library of free, high quality ringtones, notification sounds, HD wallpapers and live wallpapers optimized for your device. With over 500,000 different download options available there’s bound to be something in there for everyone and this app is definitely worth telling your not-so-savvy tech friends about.

How it works:

Once you download Zedge you will see your home screen which includes five different categories broken into wallpapers, live wallpapers, ringtones, notifications, and games. Select a category to start browsing different options and once you see something you like just tap to download. There is even an option embedded within the Zedge app that will allow you to set an image as your wallpaper without leaving the Zedge app itself. Each individual download will have a preview image, a title, a description, and a rating based on a five-star scale. The categories for ringtones and wallpapers is impressive, but don’t expect to see any music ringtones. Zedge respects that commercial music artists want money for their song rights so instead you will find unique and rare stuff made and shared by people and independent artists from all parts of the world. I enjoyed seeing support for various types of notifications sounds which I applied to incoming text messages, voice mail alerts, and email notifications. The app also has a feature in which you can recover old downloads in case you delete the app and decide to later reinstall it. As an added bonus users can mark categories as favorites and create a Zedge account which can provide additional features as well.

Conclusion:

The UI is a breeze to navigate through without any major bugs that I noticed in the time I’ve been using it. I’ve only run into a few live wallpapers that wouldn’t download onto my device. The best part of this app is the immense library of download options and everything is for free. Zedge is the perfect solution for anyone searching for free wallpapers, notification sounds, and ringtones.
