HDMI Dongle Turns Any TV into an Android TV

A company called Infinitec has created a HDMI dongle that when plugged into any TV that has an HDMI port can convert that TV into an Android 4.0 giant tablet (without touchscreen capabilities of course, but a clever remote, that we’ll get to later, does help with that). This little invention is called the Pocket TV.

Essentially this dongle is a small Android-powered computer (and like a computer though, it requires you to plug it in to a wall outlet to power it) that uses your TV as it’s monitor. You can surf the web, run Android apps, watch YouTube videos, etc. just like on a normal Android tablet. It even has a USB slot on it to plug in other devices like keyboards, mice, harddrives, etc. and a microSD card slot capable of utilizing up to a 32GB card for storage.

In addition to what it can do, is it’s potential for portability. It’s easy enough to take this dongle out from the TV and bring it with you. When you get to another TV, say in a hotel or office, etc., simply plug the dongle back in and you have all your files, apps, etc. ready to go.

One of my favorite things about this besides the portability, is the optional remote. The device does come with a very basic remote, but optionally you can get the Air Remote, which adds a keyboard and an accelerometer. You can use the accelerometer just like a Wii remote and swipe through the Android OS in a fashion slightly more reminiscent of using a touchscreen on an Android tablet.

Oh, and by the way, it’s available for pre-order for $99 on their Kickstarter site.

Check out their demo of the device in action and let us know what you think in the comments below.
