How to Install TWRP Recovery on the Asus Nexus 7

Asus Nexus 7 has got remarkable success in the Android Tablets world and may be that is the reason we’re seeing a new custom development being done everyday for the device. It all started with a root method for the Nexus 7 and today, here we’ve the TWRP Recovery for the device. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’d know that TWRP is a touch-based custom recovery that once installed, takes place of stock recovery and offers a set of useful features to the users. And in this guide, we’ll show you how you can install this beautiful looking recovery on your Nexus 7 device. So, here you go:

I. Before You Begin:

1. You must have done our How to Root the Nexus 7 procedure.

2. This will replace your current recovery with the TWRP Recovery.

3. You should apply this only on non-3G version of the device. For 3G version, head here.

II. Downloading Required Files:

1. TWRP Recovery Image (Download the latest version of Recovery)

2. Fastboot

III. Installing TWRP Recovery on the Asus Nexus 7:

1. Download and place both the files onto your Desktop.

2. Unzip files from the Fastboot archive to your Desktop. You’ll have fastboot.exe on your Desktop.

3. Turn OFF your device.

4. Reboot your device into Fastboot mode. To do that, simply hold down the Volume DOWN+Power buttons together.

5. Connect your device to your PC using the USB cable.

6. Open a Command Prompt Window on your Desktop. To do so, hold down the Shift button on your keyboard and right-click on any blank area on the screen, then select Open command window here.

7. Type in following command into the Command Prompt Window. You need to replace recoveryfilename.img with the actual name of the Recovery Image you downloaded.

fastboot flash recovery recoveryfilename.img

8. Once the recovery’s been flashed on your device, reboot your device.

9. And you’re all set!

Good Job! You now have a working custom recovery on your device and that too a touch-based recovery, use it to install some custom ROMs on your device!

    I followed your exact directions and got “fastboot is not recognized as an internal or external command

    1. Do you have the “fastboot.exe” file on your Desktop? If it’s not, then extract it from the Fastboot archive over to your Desktop and everything should work fine then.
