Video: How to Jailbreak iOS 9

Well, well, even after all the naysayers said it couldn’t be done, it looks like iOS 9 has been jailbroken.

The team that came through with the iOS 9 jailbreak is none other than the Pangu team, the same team behind the iOS 8 jailbreak. Not only does it jailbreak your iPhone but it’ll also install Cydia, the app store for jailbreak tweaks, and that’s kind of the whole point, really.

If you aren’t familiar, jailbreaking allows you to alter every aspect of iOS through the downloading of “tweaks” from the Cydia store. These tweaks can then allow you to change all of your app icon shapes, change the UI entirely, get free Wi-Fi tethering, and a whole lot more.

You can easily undo the jailbreak as well, so there’s really no reason to give it a try (just make sure to do a backup first).

To get started though, we need to jailbreak first. Here’s how:

I. Before You Begin

1. This tutorial only works on Windows at the moment, so either wait for the Pangu team to release a Mac version or borrow a friend’s PC to do this.

II. Update Your Phone to iOS 9.0.2

You need to be on iOS 9.0.2 for this to work. If you aren’t already, you can update by doing one of the following methods.

Update over Wifi

If iOS 9.0.2 is the latest version of iOS when you are doing this tutorial you can update over Wifi by going to Settings > General > Software Update and updating through there.

Update Through iTunes

If a new version of iOS came out after this article was published, but you are still BELOW iOS 9.0.2 (you can upgrade, but not downgrade), or if you are currently jailbroken on an older version of iOS, you can use iTunes to manually install iOS 9.0.2 by doing the following.

1. Head here and select your device’s firmware in the drop down box under iPhone and select Download (remember to select the firmware for your specific iPhone model, select CDMA if there is an option for it if you have Sprint or Verizon and select GSM for all other carriers).

2. With the device plugged in to the computer via USB, turn it off.

3. Hold down Power and the Home button at the same time until you see the screen go from the Apple logo to black (approx. 10 seconds) then let go of the Power button but continue to hold the Home button until iTunes pops up a dialog box saying it has discovered an iPhone in recovery mode.

4. In iTunes, select your iPhone from the sidebar on the left.

5. Now, hold Option on your keyboard (or Shift for Windows) and click Restore.

6. When the selector appears, choose the firmware file you downloaded earlier and click OK.

7. When the device restarts and is done, select the last backup you have when prompted to restore your apps, contacts, etc.

III. Backup Your iPhone Data

1. Open iTunes.

2. Plug your iPhone in via USB cable.

3. Click on your iPhone in the sidebar on the left under devices.

4. Click on Back Up Now under Backups in the Summary Tab.

IV. Prepare your iPhone for Jailbreak

Prepare the iPhone

1. Go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode.

2. Enter in your current PIN.

3. Tap Turn Passcode Off to disable the passcode so it doesn’t interfere with the process.

4. Go to Settings > iCloud.

5. Turn off Find My iPhone (you can turn it and your passcode back on when the jailbreak is done).

6. Finally, swipe up from off the bottom of the screen to get the control center and turn on Airplane Mode by tapping the plane icon.

II. Jailbreak iOS 9 Using Pangu 9

iOS 9 Pangu Jailbreak

1. Head to the developer’s site below, click on download and save the exe file to your desktop.

Pangu

2. Right-click the exe file once downloaded and click Run As Administrator.

3. Plug in the iPhone/iPod/iPad via USB cable to the computer and wait for Pangu to recognize it.

4. When it does, click the Jailbreak button and wait for it to do its thing.

5. Once done, tap on Cydia on the phone and let it do it’s thing.

6. Done! Jailbroken! Now, head to our Jailbreak Tweaks section for videos on some of our favorite tweaks from the Cydia store you should give a try now that you have this new found freedom. Enjoy!

Let me know if it worked for you or if you’re having issues in the comments below! And if it helped you please share it it’s greatly appreciated!

  1. thanks for the jailbreak! but i can’t download anything from cydia and spring and winterboard don’t show up (i can’t do anything with cydia basically)

    1. That’s normal with a new jailbreak. You have to just be patient as the developers of those tweaks update their tweaks to work with iOS 9. Shouldn’t take them too long!

  2. I tried to jailbreak and when i opened pangu it shows a pop up that says. “This app cant run on your PC. TO find a version for your PC. CHeck the software developer.” i am running the latest version of windows and got the like directly from here.

  3. After download of jailbreak Cydia would crash instantly when opened. Had to do a complete restore. Should I try again. Anyone heard of this happening!

  4. It keeps coming up wit

    Runtime error!

This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

    Please help me

  5. pangu seems to work well all throughout, and when it is done with two ‘injections’ the device reboots and only to find out that cydia does not get installed.

      1. awesome…..will do……we really appreciate your help….cant wait to succeed in this effot….all the best …cheers

      2. success….what i decided to do was everytime the install failed, i manually deleted the pangu and wwdc app on my device screen and tried and tried again; and after several attempts, finally succeeded…..awesome help site you got going here…thx

  6. what is interesting is that pangu wanted access to my photos…..i did not see that in the video tutorial on this webpage

    1. I should have been more clear. I didn’t have the camera on the phone when it asked so didn’t catch it on film, but I said “hit okay” in the video at the point when it asks and it says it on the screen capture when i say it. Again, should have been a bit more clear, but figured the Pangu app would tell you anyway 🙂

  7. David.. i was trying to jailbreak my iPhone through my mac but when i open the pangu tool i get a message telling me to close itunes and xcode, but non of them are open. Any help???

    1. Hmm not sure as I haven’t tried it on Mac. I’d recommend the standard, restarting the computer uninstalling and reinstalling Pangu and maybe opening the task manager and force closing them if they’re open.

Let me know how it goes.

  8. How can I update my iPhone 5s to 9.0.2? I tried iTunes and over wifi but it keeps saying that the latest update is 9.0.1

  9. How can I update my iPhone 5s to 9.0.2? I tried iTunes and over wifi but it keeps saying that the latest update is 9.0.1

    1. 1. You need a computer to jailbreak. 2. There is no jailbreak for iOS 9.2 you’ll have to wait until there is a jailbreak for that version. Soon as there is I’ll have a new video for it.

  10. Kasandra Sandquist

The pangu thing is downloaded. I Dan it as an administrator. And it says to plug in my phone and click start. When I plugged in my phone and it’s not letting me click the start button. Please help.

    1. Going to assume you have iOS 9.2 and that’s why it isn’t working.
There is no jailbreak for iOS 9.2 you’ll have to wait until there is a jailbreak for that version. Soon as there is I’ll have a new video for it.

is there any information on when iOS 9.2 jailbreak would be available??? or a time frame of when it is expected to release?

  12. Bryton vanBeuzekom

I attempted to update at iOS 8 and I was able to downgrade. Is there a way to do that now? I am on iOS 9.2.1

    1. Please read the featured comment at the top. This only works for 9.0.2 and below. Anything above that needs to patiently wait for a new jailbreak tutorial. Soon as there is one I’ll do a video.

    1. There is no jailbreak for iOS 9.2.1 or any version newer than 9.0.2 for that matter. You’ll have to wait until there is a jailbreak for that version. Soon as there is I’ll have a new video for it.

    1. There is no jailbreak for iOS 9.3 yet. Soon as there is I’ll do a video on it. Until then you just have to be patient like the rest of us.

And no there is no way to downgrade right now either.

  13. Hi David, first thanks for the video.
I was wondering if you could walk me through jail breaking my iPhone 6 os 9.3.1.
I get a mixed up when its time to hook the phone to the computer. If you like I will pay you for your time.

  14. When will it work over Mac desktop not pc and when it works will you make a video how to do it on Mac desktop?

    1. The tutorial is the same, you just need the Mac download from the site I link to.
Thing is this only works for iOS 9.0.2 so they’re waiting for a new jailbreak before wasting time making a Mac version. Stay tuned, as soon as there is a new jailbreak I’ll do a video.
