How to Root (and Unroot) the Samsung Galaxy 551 running Android 2.2 Froyo

The Samsung Galaxy 551 is one of those old droids that have seen better days but for those still holding on to it in the past two years, there definitely will be a wish to get more out of this aging low-end device.  For them, we advise rooting it first and then installing ClockworkMod Recovery or any other recovery available to then flash custom ROMs that should renew life for this ancient device.  The guide below will take you through one of those two steps – rooting the Samsung Galaxy 551 – and if this is what you want, read on to know how.

 I.  Before You Begin

1.  This guide is only for devices that are running Android 2.2 KD1 firmware.  For those running versions above KD1 (Android 2.2.2), look to this guide to help you.

2.  Back up everything you feel is important before you begin.

3.  Make sure that your device is charged to 75% or more before you start.

II.  Rooting the Galaxy 551

1.  Download and install z4root.1.3.0.apk on your device.

2.  Open up the Z4root app on your device.

3.  Tap on Temporary Root if you wish to remain rooted until the next reboot or Permanent Root if you would like to be rooted forever.

And you’re done!  If you wish to confirm that you are really rooted, install the Root Checker app from Play and check status.

III.  Unrooting the Galaxy 551

1.  Open up the Z4root app.

2.  Click on Unroot.
