How To: Turn a SIM Card into a MicroSIM

I. Before You Begin

1. BE CAREFUL AS YOU COULD RENDER YOUR SIM USELESS IF YOU MESS UP. So I recommend buying a new SIM card from your carrier, then do this procedure to the new SIM card and then once it works and fits you can call your carrier and have them activate the new (now microSIM) SIM card and be good to go.

2. You would do this so you can unlock your iPhone 4 and use a different SIM card, or use a different SIM in your iPad 3G.

II. Cut the SIM Card

1. First we line up the MicroSIM on the SIM card with the cut corners of each facing bottom right.

2. Now line up the three metal sections on the left of the MicroSIM with the first three sections on the left of the SIM card and have the MicroSIM slightly overlap off the side of the SIM (so we can use it as a guide for our scissors).

3. Cut the side of the SIM card off.

4. Turn the SIM and MicroSIM 180 degrees and repeat for the opposite site (make sure to do opposite sides first).

5. Now line up the metal contacts on top of each other exactly (this is the toughest part) and cut the excess off of each side.

6. Now just line up the MicroSIM on top of the SIM and cut the small corner out of the SIM to match the MicroSIM.

7. Trim anything else off (always take less than you think you need to take as you can always cut more but not put more back).

8. Done!

  1. after you cut the sim card and you stick it in the iphone4, you have to unlock the phone first right? to get it to work? cuz i have sprint :)))

  2. I did this as described, but it failed because AT&T has anticipated this maneuver at least as it relates to Blackberries and iPhones. I have a Blackberry Curve, which I hate, but my company wants me to carry it (so it’s an enterprise account). I bought a new AT&T iPhone 4s from the Apple store, unlocked with Applecare, for a total of $1,013. I took the SIM card out of my Blackberry, cut it down to a Micro SIM card size and put it in the iphone. It worked! So I thought anyways when I saw my cell service towers appear. I called a friend, and it worked, just fine. But then I realized that AT&T had automatically disabled the data service when this SIM card was put into an iPhone. Through my company I have unlimited data – for blackberries – but now that this SIM card was in an iPhone I no longer am able to use that data, which of course I need for work e-mails.

Does anyone have any ingenious ideas that can get me out of my predicament? Having the iPhone with data, but with the existing SIM card that’s on an Enterprise account?
