Unlocked Apple iPhone 4 Devices Starting at $649
Today marks the first day Apple will begin to sell unlocked iPhone 4 devices in the U.S. The 16GB will cost you $649 while the 32GB is being sold for $749, and both devices are being offered unlocked in either black or white.
Apple is looking to market the higher priced unlocked devices to a small niche market of consumers who would prefer to pay for the phone outright versus paying for the phone over the course of a two year contract. This same consumer can also have the freedom to switch between GSM carriers without hassle. Keeping in mind, there may be some extra work needed if the carrier does not offer Micro-SIM cards.
This quiet release of the unlocked device, coming a full day earlier than expected, could give new iPhone users a chance to try the device out before making the full contracted leap when the iPhone 5 is released (whenever that happens).
