Death to Adobe Flash Player for Mobile Devices Confirmed: Adobe Promises Aggressive HTML 5 Support In the Future

Adobe quickly confirmed recent rumors surrounding the future of their Flash Player for mobile devices. The company confirmed in a blog post that the Adobe Flash Player was indeed dead for mobile devices, but did vow to continue to work aggressively on the HTML 5 platform. It appears that Adobe views HTML 5 as a broader platform with significantly more capabilities than Flash is able to offer from a mobile device standpoint.

Despite the Flash Player seemingly crashing and burning for mobile devices, Adobe was quick to add that they will continue to improve Flash for desktops, and also hopes to continue to entice developers to create a native user experience for their AIR platform. The Adobe blog explains further,

Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores.  We will no longer continue to develop Flash Player in the browser to work with new mobile device configurations (chipset, browser, OS version, etc.) following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook.  We will of course continue to provide critical bug fixes and security updates for existing device configurations.  We will also allow our source code licensees to continue working on and release their own implementations.

We’re not sure what will replace Adobe Flash for mobile devices in the near future, but we’re sure it will take a while for Flash to disappear entirely from the mobile world- despite today’s ‘nail in the coffin’ announcement.
