If you’re finally done putzing around with your phone and want to return to stock, here’s how to unroot the galaxy S7 Edge or S7 (Snapdragon version) using the stock firmware.

To do this we’ll be using Odin, Samsung’s own flashing software for Windows and then downloading the stock firmware specific for the version of the S7/S7 Edge you have. Thankfully, this method makes it super easy to return to stock as we just have to select the firmware files one at a time in Odin and flash it to the phone. It’ll reboot when that’s all done and be back to stock. Here’s the step by step and a video to help.

Warning! This only works if you have the exact firmware for your device. The firmware at the link below needs to be updated for most devices so it will probably not work and the developer has yet to update it. You CAN find your firmware on the web elsewhere but it will take some digging to make sure you find the EXACT firmware for your device. Please do not ask for help if you have flashed the wrong firmware, the only solution is to find the right firmware, which you will have to do by Googling.

I. Before You Begin

  1. This will erase your phone, please save whatever you need to not lose.
  2. This require Windows since it is a Windows program to flash the firmware.

II. Download the Stock Firmware for your the Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge

  1. Download Odin from the link below, save it to your desktop, and unzip it.
    Latest Odin (3.12.3)
    Odin – try 3.12.3 first and if that doesn’t work then try this one
    Download Odin
  2. Download the firmware from this page under the Stock Firmware section and save it to your desktop as well and then extract it.
    *AT&T GS7 Edge Users, here is the latest firmware to flash if the one from the above link does not work.

III. Flash the Stock Firmware on Your Galaxy S7 / S7 Edge

  1. Turn off the phone and turn if back on by holding down Volume Down, Home, and Power at the same time to get it into download mode. Then push Volume Up to confirm. Plug it in to the computer via the USB cable.

  2. Open Odin.
    Odin
  3. Click an AP and select the file from the extracted firmware we downloaded that starts with AP.

  4. Click on CP and select the file from the extracted firmware we downloaded that starts with CP.

  5. Click on CSC and select the file from the extracted firmware we downloaded that starts with CSC.

  6. Click Start and wait for it to flash a reboot.
    Pass

There you go! You are all back to stock and can send the GS7 /GS7 Edge in for warranty, or sell it or go back and root it again. Whatever your heart desires.

    • I believe your have to search XDA for them. That developer might even have them somewhere if you ask them.

    Hi, I tried this and rather than odin saying “pass,” it says “fail.” I don’t know if this is because I had messed up the root process earlier but it seems I can’t flash the stock firmware on to it. If you have any insight, it would be much appreciated.

    • That means you are flashing the wrong firmware. If the ones I provided don’t work you’ll have to google around for the firmware for not only your model but try different firmware versions (you’ll see a series of letters in the file name that change when finding them online even if it’s the same model and carrier, that’s the firmware, try multiple of those until one works).

        After the fail my phone is stuck in recovery mode. I’ve factory reset it, cleared the cache, and still whenever I hit reboot it repeats back to recovery mode. I can get to the bootloader but I’m not sure what to do from there.

        • Again you need to flash the correct firmware. Unfortunately I can’t help you find it you’ll need to look around for it on the web. Good luck.

    Why would anyone want to unroot their S7? Stock ROM is not very good, and it has issues with reception often changing the Modem F/W helps. Plus a custom ROM often means actual development and some customisations. If it is rooted, and you’re not happy look for a different ROM, at least you have the freedom to do so. IMHO

    Plus trying to resolve the issues with a stock ROM is hardly ‘putzing’ … lol

    • Agreed. And putzing is referring to getting addicted to custom Roms and just flashing them constantly. Something I may or may not be guilty if once in a while.

    An issue I have is when I hit start, instead of starting the flash it says “Setup Connection.” I have followed the directions above. Am I doing something wrong? Have I loaded the wrong firmware? I understand you are busy, but if and when you could respond I would appreciate it. Best.

        Okay, I re-did it on my work computer and I believe I got it to work. If the device status is “Official” that would mean it is unrooted, right? Also, I apologize if this seems like a silly question. Obviously I do not know what I am doing and should not be messing around with this stuff, lol. Your help is much appreciated, sir!

        • You are all set then. And it’s fine we all have to start somewhere. So long as you have that firmware to flash back to stock it’s safe to keep trying. Up to you.

    Do I need to add a BL* file before I start the unroot? You don’t seem to add one but in the last pic there is one inserted. I tried with just the 3 you mention and darn near bricked my phone.. now I’m scared lol

    • Most firmware files won’t need it. And relax, so long as you have the right firmware you can’t brick your phone with this (you just use it to flash the correct firmware and problem solved –it literally is the tool Samsung uses to fix “bricks”).
      If the firmware didn’t work, I’d recommend looking for the exact firmware you need and try that first without the BL selected then if it doesn’t work and you are sure it is the right firmware then try it with the BL. Hope that makes sense!

        Makes sense! But I don’t understand why the firmware you provide won’t work? I tried searching for correct firmwares but I could find any for my region, US. Does that matter?

        • So the firmware I linked to is a collection someone created, but it doesn’t have all of them. Most of them are there but sometimes if you’re phone is on a different version then it might need that version to work. Read the other comments or head to that forum I linked to with the firmwares for more info on that.

  • David, you are not going to believe this!! Everything has been going fine with my AT&T GS7 for almost a week now. Remember you helped me use your files to flash the image with the debloater and fixes on it and ive been using it fine all week. Well today, i needed to reboot the phone and when it came up, it got stuck on the AT&T logo, and you can feel it every 5 or so secs vibrate so its looping. I tried several times forcing a power off and then restarting and same thing. I finally was able to get to the Recovery and now it will only boot up into the recovery, it will not even go back to the AT&T loop …. what the heck did i do. All i did was just reboot the silly phone. So any ideas or am i going to just wipe and reset again and reload everything? Let me know what you think when you can, not going to do anything until i hear from you. I dont want to waste time, you know ?

    • When it comes to rooting and hacking, sometimes things just go wrong. I can’t tell you what happened to your phone in particular, but to fix it just unroot it and reroot (or just stay unrooted if it keeps happening to you for whatever reason). Nothing else to do if it won’t get past the logo :/

      • Yeah actually thanks to your image, i was back up and running in no time. And i have been using the Smart Switch mobile app which is fantastic and im good now. But the only other thing i was wondering and if you can tell me about this or point me in the right direction. Once i get it the way i want with your Root image and the debloat and fixes, etc …. How can i then make an image out of everything so i could always come right back up if needed. I have most of the big root apps like Flashfire, etc … do i use one of those and what do i make. Still not real sure about the file structure etc on Androids. But any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks !! and have a wonderful weekend.

    • Then you didn’t do the tutorial right. Make sure you have the right firmware for your phone model and carrier.

    • You need to find the correct firmware by going to XDA-developers.com or searching Goolge for it. I don’t have a stock pile of all the possible firmwares unfortunately.

    The method not XDA for uproot has the following at the beginning.. Prerequisites: Samsung Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge and Microsoft Windows PC on one of these carriers: AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular, or Verizon . ….
    Wich,, especially nothing to help with S7 SM G930U . Phones, however I found a firmware that was a TMB tmobile,,, that would work but it did nothing. .

    I got a ‘thanks for joining t-mobile ‘ message before I ever had service… It was and still is an unlocked phone but has the TMB instead of the USA code it should have… because of the being a snapdragon flavor. (Chips etc I believe)

    “Snapdragon” is the USA Chip set my G930U is a Snapdragon too.

    The XDA posts you are referring to are carrier specific. . The whole thing started with the claim of rooting the G930U. Now saying it uproot ALL snapdragon ,,x is ,, we’ll frustrating.. this is the second time I’ve seen referred to the XDA forum.. whew! Glad I got that out…

    • You can still use the same tutorial and just find the G930U firmware, you’ll just have to find it somewhere else on the web.

        Agreed in ttheory I havetried it 2 times. One with USA and one with the tmobile (TMB) code structure.
        My phone flashes a “fuzed” xxx.xx*** error upon failure. And then restarts at the end of the event

        • You need the correct firmware. That isn’t the firmware for your phone. You’ll literally need to Google and do research to find that version for your specific phone unfortunately.

    I Rooted my S7 edge from verizon and i dont like what it has done to my phone (first time i have root a phone) and I have folowed the steps to get it back to normal but when i press start it says failed any ideas why are anyone able to help?

    I have a se / sm g930u .. axaa s7 phone.
    I have experienced many of the issues people are having. Including all apps saying no root but Samsung saying violation ect.. samsung+ says it is a rooted phone as well.
    I spoke with Samsung and after their complaints of me messing with my phone.. I convinced the operator it was my phone and I paid for it outright.. the best I got out of them was to take it to an authorized tec , I found him at best buy and he has a diagnostic and believes he can reset the alerts and it will also allow me to update the phone once again.
    I will post a follow up. To this message after visit to that tec, this being a forum/site of choice. Thank you David for such a great site and your follow through. Regards,, Jared

    • Sorry to hear you’re having such issues. Next time don’t mention the rooting, simply say you updated it and it stopped working. Usually they’ll fix it.

      Regardless, the local tech shop is literally going to do what I told you to do. Which is to go find the firmware for your specific model and flash it using this method. Sorry I don’t have it and the developer of that page didn’t list it but I promise it exists on the web somewhere you just need to search for it. I had to do the same for my AT&T GS7 Edge, it took a while but eventually after trying 3 or 4 different firmwares I found one that worked (and posted it in the article above).

        Cool, I think their is a lack of availability of the stock firmware..

        I’ve found XDA to be as confusing as any for regular user.. for example the unroot thread is labeled” how to unroot the g930u ” and although the procedure may be correct, their is everything but the g930u.. so I believe their is a lot of confusion coming from even the developer sites and it’s filtering down, that’s all.

        Does the lack of availability of the stock g930u firmware have anything to do with the fact you can’t take a backup copy to begin with? I’m also wondering if it is possible to go back because you can’t downgrade the boot loader. The stock g930u has a v2 bootloader, I believe.

    I rooted my s7 edge with your other video but when i used it it went to a blue screen and all i can do is go to the download mode or a boot up where it gets stuck. and when i tried uninstalling it said failed. what do i do?

    • Then unroot it using this method and make sure to have the correct firmware. Unfortunately, the creator of the firmware page I link to hasn’t updated some of the models so you might need to search on Google or other forums to find the correct firmware for your model and flash that. Keep flashing them until one works. Good luck and sorry for the issues!

  • Hey man so I root my phone back in August. Since then I have to factory reset my phone every so often it’s a pain to do so. Clearly I tripped the Knox sensor and it’s doing this. I see in the video and tutorial that yoy didn’t put the BL file into Odin why is that? Is that probably the reason at to why it kept falling when I would try to uproot because I was using the BL file too?

    • It has nothing to do with the BL file. That’s the Bootloader and during root it isn’t changed is why you don’t need to flash it. If you want to flash it though and reflash the other files go ahead it (reflashing even just the other files might help so adding the bootloader can’t hurt). Good luck.

      • I downloaded the AT&T firmware from the first link and i also downloaded it from the second link. I have a S7 Edge and when I just attempted to flah the firmware onto my phone I got a Failed outcome.What could be the problem?

        • Means either it was corrupted while downloading, in which case just try again after redownloading it. Otherwise, it means you grabbed the wrong firmware, in which case you’ll need to search the web for the correct firmware for your particular model and firmware version. Unfortunately, the developer I linked to hasn’t updated his list in a while so we’re sort of on our own to find the correct firmware now that there has been updates since this was written (and it won’t let you flash an older firmware apparently).

    I have the AT&T Galaxy S7 (Not Edge) and I rooted it back in August. Since then, I’ve had to factory reset every so often and the root doesn’t even benefit me. I’ve been trying to unroot since September and have had no luck with any of the many many firmwares I have tried. I’ve tried Odin 3.11, 3.12 and 3.12 Prince Comsey. Any help?

    • Unfortunately you need to simply find the correct firmware. That’s the only solution. It took me a while to find the firmware for the att edge version (now linked in the article above for anyone else with it). What is the firmware version your device is on exactly? I.e. can you take a screenshot of the About software page and post it here?

        • OK, so you need to search for the stock firmware for the G930A (your model) and the firmware that ends in APH1 (your build). If you can find that somewhere you can flash that using this method and be good to go.

            I figured it out. I had the right firmware the whole time, the problem was my pc. I uninstalled the Samsung drivers and Kies, restarted my PC, reinstalled the drivers only, rebooted again then launched Odin in Administrator and redid everything and it all worked.

    Help! I’m trying to unroot again but I keep having and error : REV CHECK FAIL SYSTEM FUSED 3>BINARY 1. I made sure I downloaded the right firmware too.

    • That error means you are flashing an older firmware than what you have and is the same issue everyone is facing. Please find the correct, latest firmware for your device. This site seems to have some depending on carrier, otherwise you’ll have to do your best Googling for it – http://samsung-updates.ru/

    When I am selecting the files to unroot in odin they don’t show up in the desktop section when they are on the desktop. Please help I am scared about not being able to fix it. Im trying to unroot because I keep getting this security error on my phone.

    • You need to extract them first. Watch the video for more info.

        I extracted all of the files. I clicked on all of them in odin and 2 of them worked but if i try importing the AP file odin loads then windows says odin is not responding.

        • The AP file is massive. It can take a long time to load. You just have to wait a while and don’t try and click or do anything after you select it.

          • You don’t need the BL file usually but it doesn’t hurt to flash it. I did in the video cause I was getting some weird errors so decided to flash it too to be safe. Good luck!

            I just hit start and it said “FAIL! Model dispatch fail” It started downloading to the phone and now on the phone is stuck at downloading just a little bit. What should I do?

          • You can usually hold down volume down and power and keep holding it and it’ll boot back into normal mode depending where it got the error. Otherwise that means you have the wrong firmware and need to find the right one that’s the same build (that one wasn’t right)

          • First off, don’t get annoyed. There is always a fix, and frankly with any of these things you are doing them at your own risk which I’m sure you understand. As for the firmware, as I mentioned, the ones there at that link are NOT the latest builds you have to do some due diligence in finding the correct ones on the web (since that developer hasn’t updated his list in a while). Thankfully, I had the same phone when I did the video, and I posted the latest firmware I could find in the article (you can see the download link in step 2 of Section II. Try that and let me know if that works.

            I tried the firmware again and this time I got a different error and now when I try to boot my phone it is stuck on the s7 edge bootup screen and it says custom under it. My phone wont boot anymore. I just dont know why nothing is working and every possible option fails.

          • Please try the firmwares I just linked and don’t panic, this is literally the software Samsung uses to fix broken phones. You’re only issue is you need to find the correct firmware for your model.

            Worse case scenario you tell Samsung you got an update and then it got stuck like this and they’ll replace it under warranty (don’t mention you tried to use any of this, just say it popped up with an update and you left it to update and when you came back to it it was stuck).

            Again, though, you can fix it with the right firmware.

I tried the entire process on a newly installed virtual machine and reinstalled odin and tried it again and it passed. Thank you so much man!             Its actually “FAIL! Model dismatch fail” when trying to perform the Initialization step in Odin. Sounds like broken-English or a cryptic message string… obviously not a match for something. I am having the same issue trying to factory reset with “ATT_G930AUCS2APF2.zip”. Please advise, I have SM-G930A. When in recovery screen (upVolume + power + home), the G930AUCS4APK1 is what is listed at the top? As a side note, I did have the working fine with root; however, I deleted something (not sure what app it was) and stuck in boot loop. At this point I am just trying to get back to factory, but all the normal steps are not working. I can not find G930AUCS4APK1 anywhere on the web?

    everywhere I look, i need to pick a specific region code relating specific carriers.

So long as you have that file, I recommend trying to flash it on the phone using this tutorial and that’ll at least let you know you are safe to try and root (as you’ll be able to get back to stock using that file).     Please help. It keeps failing and I’m not sure why. Now when I try to power on it takes me to a screen that says “an error has occurred while updating the device software. Use the Emergency recovery function in the Smart Switch PC Software.” I tried that but it said my phone is not supported. I tried Samsung Kies but that too said my phone is not supported.

    This is the error message I get from Odin. I appreciate any advice. Thanks

    • Those errors in Odin mean it’s the wrong firmware. Why did your phone give you that warning in the first place on the phone? Did you try and root it? Can you provide a link to the tutorial you did if you did.

        Thanks for the fast response. I paid OneClickRoot to remotely use my laptop to root my phone so I could retrieve accidentally deleted photos and videos from my recent trip to the Great Wall. Unfortunately, the tech did a complete factory wipe before we could even root the phone so everything was deleted and rooting my phone became pointless after that. I was so upset I asked them to just stop and refund me my money. The problem is, it’s still unlocked. I just want my phone back to normal. I’ve accepted that those memories are gone but I need my cell phone back.     Hello-

    So I went and found the firmware that corresponds to my phone (baseband version: G930VVRS4APH1) and followed the instructions but Odin reports All threads completed (succeed 0/fail 0) and nothings happens . Any thoughts? Worst case I can factory reset correct?

    Hello,

    I had a custom Rom android 7. After i lost my root because of an update i triend to root again. From that point i have the black screen samsung galaxy s7 edge. When i try to instal stock via Odin it gave me a fail. You talk about the right firmware. Does this meaning i must find a 7.0 firmware? I tried the beta but it didnt do the trick…also a FAIL in odin.

    Please help/

    • No you need the latest firmware for you device, so just find that and flash it. Also, try the other version of Odin I’ve added to the tutorial above.

    I saw this post and had rooted my galaxy S7 edge with your other guide. The problem was I did not see that my exact firmware was not anywhere on the internet. I have a edge on AT&T and it just so happens they pushed an over the air update out in October. G935AUCS4APK1 is the one I had but try to find that online and you will get a whole lot of nothing. I tried all the firmware for ATT phones listed on http://www.theandroidsoul.com/download-galaxy-s7-edge-firmware/#jump-model-no-sm-g935u-unlocked-edition-for-each-us-carrier
    But none of those worked. I was about to resign to waiting for the next update to come out to unbrick my phone. It would not let me downgrade and my firmware was OTA only so I could not find it anywhere.
    But then I found http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/102782/G935UUEU4API3_G935UOYM4API3_USC/
    That is the unlocked version of the firmware that I had. So if you have G935AUCS4APK1 then you should download G935UUEU4API3. I flashed it with Odin 3.12 Prince Comsey, it came with two CSC’s so use CSC_OYM. After 8 hours it finally worked. I have a working phone again.
