How to Setup Text Shortcuts in iOS 7 (Video)

A neat little feature in iOS 7 that most people don’t know exists is the ability to setup text shortcuts. Essentially, you can use a few letters while typing and have iOS automatically expand it out to whatever phrase you want. For example, “idk” could become “I don’t know”, “omw” could become “on my way”, etc. Not only can you use it to make yourself seem more “proper” but you can also use it for more valuable things that you catch yourself typing in a lot like “num” could become your actual phone number, “eml” could become your email address, “hme” your address, etc. Oh, the possibilities!

Before you get carried away with the excitement of all you could use this for, you need to know how to set it up. Let’s walk through that really quickly.

I. Setup Text Shortcuts in iOS 7

1. Head to Settings > General > Keyboard.
2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Add New Shortcut.
3. Type in the phrase you want it to expand out to in the top text field.
4. Type in the shortcut you want to use (try to make sure it isn’t something you would normally type).
5. Tap Save.
6. Repeat steps 3 – 5 until you add all the shortcuts you want.

There you go. Now, you’ll not only save time, but you’ll seem more prim and proper while typing your messages.
