Android users with root often do so to flash a ROM, bringing an entirely new look and feel to their device. It takes a bit of work, though — ROM managers require you to do the work normally associated with the OEM. There’s also the tedious work of managing your versions, and cleaning up files. Here we take a look at some handy ROM manager apps for Android, which should make your life a bit easier.
ROM Manager
The name says it all, and the source tells you it’s legit. ClockworkMOD is a tried and true source for all things ROM, and this is their app. Whether you choose to get their nightly builds or opt for the more stable builds, ROM Manager will keep you on track. There are two versions; one free and one premium, which runs you $5.99. If you’re going with Clockwork for your ROMs, you’d likely want to pick this app up.
ROM Manager Janitor
This one is simple, but really useful. If you’re using ROM Manager, you might find yourself with a ton of old ROMs (this is especially the case for those on the nightly builds). Janitor lets you choose which files get deleted automatically. If you want to save those from the last week, but lose the rest — no problem! Janitor also ignores custom names, so if you’ve got one you really love, Janitor will leave it there. A free app, it’s one of the better for cleaning up the clutter that accumulates over time.
ROM Installer
This one is a bit of a go-to for ROM needs from mobile, should you not be tied into any one source. ROM Installer pulls from sources like AOKP, CyanogenMod, and Paranoid Android for just about any ROM you could want. It’s a good way to find and download the ROMs you might want, but isn’t a go-to for all your needs. Where it offers variety, it falls short with some utility.
ROM Toolbox
Where ROM Installer falls short, ROM Toolbox picks up. Here you’ll get better backup options, and access to things like a CPU slider. You can also schedule your backups and downloads, and even get breakout data on apps. There is a free version, but the $5.99 option may suit power users better.
Flashify
Uh oh — you did the unthinkable. You screwed something up, and you need to go back to square one. Instead of cursing and drinking too much, try Flashify. The app backs up and stores your boot and recovery images, so you can start over without having to rebuild, too. Best of all, to recover your device, you don’t even need to enter recovery mode. You can store locally and/or in the cloud, and the .img files can be accessed from within the app. Nothing makes recovery easier than Flashify (Of course, assuming you can get the phone to boot up. CrackFlasher
CrackFlasher doesn’t have the cleanest, sexiest interface — but it’s good. Really good. CrackFlasher ROM Manager is a great app for finding and downloading ROMs from various sources. It gives a more in-depth look at each download than some other apps, but is a bit crude. What it lacks in eye appeal it makes up for in usefulness, though.
Auto Flasher
When you’re looking for a ROM manager app, you want one that’s easy to use and effective. Auto Flasher is just that. It’s easy to use, lightweight, and useful for those times you need multiple files downloaded. It doesn’t work in every situation (ClockworkMOD is its own beast), but it does work brilliantly in most scenarios.
