How to Root the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 (SM-T530NU)
The Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 is one of the tablets from the Samsung’s Galaxy Tab series of Android tablets. If you’ve bought this device and are looking to root it, here’s what you’ll need to gain root-access on it and to get the most out of it.
Rooting is the process of gaining administrative rights on your Android device. Once we root our Android device, we can then make changes to it to customize it well beyond what it normally can do.
Once you have root access on your Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1, you’ll be able to:
- Remove apps that were preinstalled by your carrier/manufacturer from your device.
- Free up storage space (because of the above benefit).
- Increase battery life (apps that might have been running constantly can be removed).
- Increase performance (after removing apps that are always running, the device will be less bogged down and run smoother).
- Update to a new version of Android (by flashing a custom recovery/ROM, see the end of this procedure for more info on that).
- Tons of other customizations when you use your new found administrative rights to flash a custom ROM (again, see the end of this procedure for more info on that).

Will this work the same for the 7.0 inch model???
I tried looking for it on this website but i cant find the 7.0 inch model.
Hello Bobby,
Nop, this won’t.
If there’s no procedure for your device on our site, we’ll do one for you. Can you please confirm the model number of your device by going to Menu > Settings > About device on your tablet? Is it SM-T231? Let us know.
Thanks!
Hello Mahesh and No, my model number is SM-T230NU, and if you could so do a procedure for me i would really appreciate it, ive been looking everywhere for one, but just cant find it.
Hi Bobby,
It seems there’s no root method for your device. However, I suggest you to give the following method a try if it works for you – https://theunlockr.com/2014/08/09/how-to-root-the-samsung-galaxy-s3-mini-value-edition/
Let us know if it helps you root your device. Thanks!
What is the procedure if the device does not re-boot after flashing?
I am still showing the Android with Downloading, Do Not Turn Off target
Hi Jim,
Did Odin show success or fail?
I have followed the procedure to root my tablet and after this change the language to Russian. It was successful. After a while I have changed the language back to English. Now I can’t change it to Russian next time. When I tried to check the device with Root Checker it writes that I have no access to root. I tried to go with same procedure again but without any success. Please, give me an idea what I can do. Thanks.
Search our site for an Unroot procedure for your device and do it. It should get your device back to stock. Then, use the above procedure to get root-access on your device, and you’ll be all set.
Thanks!
Thanks
You’re welcome!
Hey guys,
I have a tab 4 10.1 which is listed as a “SM-T530” on its settings… but there’s no mention to it being a SM-T530*NU*.
What does the NU mean? Is it the same version as mine? If it isn’t, will this method still work on my tablet?
I’m wondering if my tablet is a different, localised version. I am Portuguese, bought it in a Spanish branch of a German online store and, as it turns out, the tablet’s packaging was written in Hungarian – and Hungarian was the OS stock language.
The stuff I get into…
Hey Mike,
If yours is a SM-T530, use the following CF-Root file instead – http://download.chainfire.eu/441/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-matissewifi-matissewifizs-smt530.zip
Thanks!
Odin doesn’t recognize my device when I plug it into my computer while it’s in Download Mode. I’ve tried reinstalling the drivers and I have debug mode on.
Everything else is in check, but it just won’t recognize my device.
If your device isn’t recognizable when you reboot it into download mode, MAKE SURE IT’S IN DOWNLOAD MODE. You don’t want it being in recovery mode. recovery mode happens when you press the VOLUME UP button, instead of the VOLUME DOWN. The Galaxy tab 4 10.1 has its volume down button on the left hand side, while the volume up is on the right hand side (it’s kind of backwards). So, just double check.
How long should this take? went through the steps and its stuck on the downloading screen
Hi Matt,
This shouldn’t take too long. Did you install the required drivers before doing the procedure?
Does this rooting process worked for the SM-T530NU (white and 16g version)? Has anyone heard if TWRP can be used on the SM-T530NU? If so, which one? What recovery did you use?
Hey Jason,
This should work fine for a SM-T530NU.
Thanks!
have you used the TWRP custom recovery for this device?
I am trying to Unroot my device but have a problem. It starts working but after a while it comes with: ” SECURE CHECK FAIL : aboot ” at the tablet and “FAIL!” at Odin.
About a 5 month ago I did it without problem. What can I do it this case? Thanks.
I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 Nook Edition Model SM-T530NU, will this work?
Hello, William:
I just tried it; no problem. It’s a Tab IV that they have added the NOOK software to and have the addition in the boot splash screen; no real modifications past that. If you go to the B/N website for updates, they direct you to the Samsung website, which pretty well tells you that there’ve been no real mods made. HTH.
Regards,
Robert
Hello everyone,
Would anyone be able to tell me if rooting an SM-T530NU will allow me to add Greek as a system language. By factory settings, it only includes a few languages, but obviously Greek is not one of them. Just wondering if this would be possible, and if so, how could I do that after I root it.
Hi Felix,
See if this app helps you add a system language to your phone – https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.co.c_lis.ccl.morelocale&feature=search_result
As for the rooting, it’s recommended that you first setup your phone before rooting it. Shouldn’t take too long to setup the phone.
Hope this helps!
Hello Mahesh,
Thank you for your response. I tried that app but it doesn’t have Greek language.
So I guess I can try rooting my Galaxy Tab 4 (SM-T530NU) (not a phone). However, when I reach the step to boot my device in download mode, it instead boots into recovery mode. I hold Volume Down, Home and Power and it boots into the screen shown in the attached image. I tried the ‘apply update from ADB’ but Odin won’t pick up the device. Any suggestions?
I have the samsung tab 4 10.1 sm-t530nu with android lolipop 5.0.2 and when i run the superSU it tell me ( the SU needs to be updated. continew?) i hit (continue) —-
then onother screen appears saying ( if you have a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM that can be use install the SU binary. This is recommended for HTC devices. How would you like to install the SU binary. Normal or TWRP/CWM ) I go with normal—-Super SU installing please wait… If you see this message fot more than five minutes Please reboot and try again —- Then it comes up with Installation Failed! please reboot and try again. I have done it reboot and tryed Again and same thing happens what can i do ???
So where do I go to find the equivalent information for rooting from Linux? We are a non-MSWin household.
