How to Root the Asus Padfone X
The Asus Padfone X is one of the Android devices that Asus launched in the year 2014. The device consists of some great hardware and it’s definitely a great buy. If you already own this device, but aren’t able to use its hardware at its fullest, you should consider rooting your device. Our guide below should help you gain root-access on your device, so you can get the most out of it.
Rooting is the process of gaining administrative rights on your Android device. Once we root our Android device, we can then make changes to it to customize it well beyond what it normally can do.
Once you have root access on your Asus Padfone X, you’ll be able to:
- Remove apps that were preinstalled by your carrier/manufacturer from your device.
- Free up storage space (because of the above benefit).
- Increase battery life (apps that might have been running constantly can be removed).
- Increase performance (after removing apps that are always running, the device will be less bogged down and run smoother).
- Update to a new version of Android (by flashing a custom recovery/ROM, see the end of this procedure for more info on that).

Interested? Here’s how to root your Asus Padfone X:
I. Before You Begin
1. This will void the warranty of your device. We won’t be held responsible if you end-up bricking or damaging your device as the consequence of this procedure. Do it at your own risk.
2. This should flash a custom recovery as well.
II. Rooting the Asus Padfone X
1. Enable Unknown sources on your device by heading to Menu > Settings > Security > Unknown sources.
2. Head over to the Towelroot website on your device.
3. Tap on the Lambda icon.
4. It’ll begin downloading an app on your device.
5. When the app’s downloaded, tap on it and install it on your device.
6. Launch the app from your App Drawer.
7. Tap on Make it ra1n in the app.
8. It should begin rooting your device.
9. When you’re rooted, head over to the Google Play store and download and install SuperSU on your device.
10. You’re now fully rooted!
Congrats! Your Asus Padfone X is now rooted and you can confirm the same by installing Root Checker from the Google Play store.
If you’d like to flash a custom recovery in order to flash custom ROMs, here’s how you can do that:
III. Flashing a Custom Recovery on the Asus Padfone X
1. Head over to the Google Play store and download and install Terminal Emulator on your device.
2. Launch it from your App Drawer.
3. Type in following command into the Terminal Emulator window:
curl 'http://builds.casual-dev.com/files/Asus/Padfone%20X/TWRP-Nexus5repack-AO1.img'>/sdcard/TWRPrecovery.img; su -c 'dd if=/sdcard/TWRPrecovery.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery' bs=4096; sync; reboot recovery;
4. Wait for it to download and flash a custom recovery on your device.
5. When your device’s screen goes black, press the Power button.
6. You’re done!
Excellent! Your Asus Padfone X now has root as well as a custom recovery. These should help you flash various custom ROMs on your device.

The original version of towel root is the one you need to root with. Version 2 and 3 will not root the padfone x.
how the heck do i find version 1? looked everywhere but i cant seem to find it
New updates from asus have blocked all root access unless you use a pc with USB cable. Any version of this method will work with a pc.

Will rooting my padfone x disable the att cell service, and should I wait to do this while on a good wifi connection instead of cell data?

Nop, rooting doesn’t have anything to do with your carrier. Your device should continue to work fine with your carrier, even though it’s rooted.
We’d recommend using a decent WiFi connection to do the procedure, so as to avoid any issues that might arise while downloading the file. Thanks!
