How to Root the Huawei Ascend Y520
While many universal methods have failed to root the Huawei Ascend Y520, there is one method that’s confirmed to be working and that is to flash a custom recovery and then use it to flash SuperSU to gain root. It works for a number of devices including the Huawei’s Ascend Y520.

I. Before You Begin
1. This could void the warranty of your device. We won’t be held responsible for anything that happens from doing this tutorial so please proceed at your own risk.
2. You must have a Windows based PC in order to do this procedure.
3. You should’ve Huawei USB drivers installed on your Windows PC. Install them if they aren’t already.
4. This should also flash a custom recovery called CWM on your device.
5. You should only try this on a Huawei Ascend Y520.
How to Root the Huawei Ascend Y520
To root the device, you’ll first flash a custom recovery and then use it to flash SuperSU to gain root. Here’s how you can do that:
II. Downloading Required Files
1. Download SP Flash Tool and save it to your desktop.

2. Download Scatter File and save it to your desktop.

III. Flashing a Custom Recovery on the Huawei Ascend Y520
1. Extract files from SP Flash Tool over to your desktop by right-clicking on it and selecting Extract here.
2. Double-click on SP Flash Tool setup file and install the tool on your PC.
3. When the tool’s installed, launch it by double-clicking on its executable file.
4. Click on Scatter-loading button in the tool and select the Scatter file you have downloaded on your PC.
5. Uncheck all of the elements except for Recovery on the SP Flash Tool interface.
6. Double-click on the Recovery option and choose CWM Recovery available on your desktop.
7. Head to Menu > Settings > About phone on your device and tap on Build number for 7-8 times and it’ll say you’re a developer.
8. Head to Menu > Settings > Developer options and turn on USB debugging and Allow mock locations.
9. Turn off your device.
10. Plug in your device to your PC while it’s turned off.
11. Hit Download in the tool and it will start flashing CWM Recovery on your device. Wait for it to do so.
12. When the tool’s done flashing CWM, reboot your device.
Congrats! CWM Recovery was successfully flashed on your Huawei Ascend Y520, and here’s how to use it to gain root on your device:
IV. Rooting the Huawei Ascend Y520
1. Connect your device to your PC using a USB cable.
2. Copy SuperSU .zip from your desktop over to the internal SD card storage on your device.
3. When SuperSU is copied, disconnect your device from your PC.
4. Turn off your device.
5. Turn your device back on in recovery mode by holding down Volume UP and Power buttons together.
6. Your device should reboot into CWM Recovery mode.
7. Select install zip from sdcard followed by choose zip from sdcard.
8. Choose SuperSU .zip to be installed on your device.
9. Select Yes when prompted.
10. Wait for CWM to flash SuperSU on your device.
11. When CWM’s done flashing SuperSU, reboot your device by selecting reboot system now in the recovery menu.
12. Your device should reboot.
And there you go!
Your Huawei Ascend Y520 is now rooted and is running a working version of CWM custom recovery.
