xpPhone's Customizable Options Include T-Mobile US 3G

xpPhone specs

So if you are unfamiliar with the xpPhone, it is a “phone” made by ITG that will run a full version of Windows XP with a customized UI built on top.

And besides the fact that it runs a full XP install, there is one factor that might help them sell this phone; connectivity options, and lots of them.

The connectivity options on this device ensure that EVERYONE in ANY COUNTRY can use this phone to it’s full potential:

GSM, CDMA, or TD
WiMax or No WiMax
And you can choose what 3G frequencies you want! Now, we all assumed that that meant no love for the companies new to 3G (T-Mobile USA in particular) and it isn’t mentioned anywhere on there site, so I had to find out.

Spoke to an ITG R&D representative, and he confirmed that 1700mhz UMTS (T-Mobile’s 3G frequency) will DEFINITELY be an option.

What a concept?! “Choose whatever frequencies you want and we’ll put them in for you”. It’s what I’ve been wanting manufacturers to do for a long time. And I mean, why not, right? Allow you to sell a lot more phones to a lot more places and what is the extra cost? Having dropdown options during the checkout process? Wow, bet that broke the bank…

Now, I know what most are thinking, XP on a phone? That’s almost a 10 year old OS. Well, as my Dell Mini 9 can attest to (and it doesn’t have much better specs than the xpPhone), if it can run XP it can probably run Windows 7. Well, you can bet the second they give us one of these “phones” we’ll try our hardest to get 7 on it, and I think that might make this “phone” a more viable option, no?

Anyone thinking they may want this phone? With XP or 7? Why or why not?

  1. I would so want to have this phone,
the option of having an MID with a full OS over any smart phone wins off the back,

If win 7 were cabable of running on a device such as this than yes i would prefer to have win 7 than any other OS, but Xp has the advantage of being around for a long time alot of programs support Xp unlike win 7. ( I recently purchased a new desktop with win 7 and I really do love it but when it comes down to it programs i use, such as Alexp’s ps3 eye driver software doesnt work on win 7 only xp, 2000, vista, and linux ). Which is why i wouldnt mind Xp over win7… well not much as xp as vista. If im not mistaken the acer aspire one dual OS is luanched with android and Xp OS. Why have this netbook run Xp instead of Win 7?

But to the real question I think Win 7 on this device would make it worth while i like to think of it as the hero running on my G1 Its newer, Its better, Its hot. But in the end im using my G1’s original set up with donut, because it works flawfless and i can use features i couldnt on hero such as bluetooth :] and for a fact when i can I will get this phone and if u guys do manage to get win 7 running, Ima be all over that asking question like

    Hello Unlockr,

    HELP IM LOST :O

    Lol

I want this phone, win 7 would be AWESOME, and for now Xp isnt so bad…
Is there a release date and price?

  2. If this thing was upgradeable to multi-boot W7/Android + HTC Sense UI for the phone part of it… I would have to get it… Especially with a 4.8″ screen…

Do you think is doable TheUnlockr???

  3. Would be awesome if one could buy it without any OS on it at a lower price… Then we could add our own flavor…

Is porting of Android with Sense UI onto a MID device something anybody is working on at the moment… ???

    1. Y314K,

So long as the processor is AMD.. don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Will a dev who isn’t get paid to do it devote the large amount of time to do it, probably not. But anything is possible. Maybe I’ll mess with it when I put Windows 7 on it.
If anything you could have an X10 or N900 and then this bad boy could replace your laptop lol

  4. Not just to recap on specs…

    Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth – Goodz… Maybe put in Bluetooth 3.0 on it…

AMD Super Mobile Processor (not sure of Ghz but 1.6 is my guess, if anyone knows please comment) – Hopefully 2.0

1GB of RAM – Option for 2GB’s would be great

4.8″ resistive touch screen – This needs to be Capacitive or with the option for Capacitive… non

    Up to a 64GB SSD AND a 120GB HDD – Goods…

1.3MP camera – That needs to go up to at least 5MP Vid Cam too

Slide out QWERTY keyboard – Goods…

    On screen mouse – Goods…

Comes in GSM or CDMA with 3G support (we’ll see about the 3G support though for what companies)
Optional WiMax – TMobile would be great out of contract…

Windows XP – NEEDS TO BE W7 but that can be taken care on our end…

Hopefully we could run Sense UI at the same time as W7 either beside it or on top off…

  5. man i would so want this phone…. but is it going to be offeerd through carriers?? and i wounder if it is sold through carriers how much would the sevice cost… i think it might be costly…but still looks like a awsome phone…

    1. Ceas,

If it’s GSM you want to use then you could just use whatever plan you use now, wouldn’t make a difference.
I highly doubt carriers will pick it up though, but if they let me put whatever 3G I want in it, I’ll take it without a carrier anyway and get rid of my dell mini (and put Windows 7 on it lol)

  6. As far as we know right now… This is just vaporware, right??? No vid of one of this things running… ala CruchPad…
