Smaller SIM Cards the Next Logical Step for AT&T
During an interview at the D9 conference last week, AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega agreed that a smaller SIM card was a “no brainer”. He confirmed that AT&T was “working with the industry” on the possibility of smaller SIM cards. In late May, France Telecom CEO Stephane Richard acknowledged during an interview that Apple and other wireless companies had reached an agreement to move towards the smaller SIM card versus the embedded chip Apple showed interest in before.
Another executive at Orange, a subsidiary of France Telecom, confirmed that Apple has already submitted new requirements for a smaller SIM card. We can’t help but remember the micro-SIM that iPhone 4 and iPad currently utilize and ponder if this is where the industry might be headed, or maybe an ever smaller SIM could be in the future.
Despite AT&T not offering any additional details on how they will execute their smaller SIM card plan, we’ll look to start seeing them pop up within the next year.
