Hitachi Introduces 4.5 inch Glasses-Free 3D Display For Smartphones
For all of the glasses-free 3D buffs out there, it appears that the 3D technology could see some improvements thanks to Hitachi’s latest 4.5-inch IPS display.
The display not only sports a high 1280 x 720 resolution, but it utilizes a less common lenticular lens approach instead of the parallax barrier method used by well known devices such as the Nintendo 3DS and the HTC EVO 3D. For comparison, the previous model displayed by Hitachi was sized at just 3.1 inches and had 480×854 resolution.
What does this all mean for the end consumer? Well, Hitachi claims that their technology will allow for significantly brighter and more intense 3D images than other displays (470 cd/m2, specifically), and images could appear actually brighter in 3D mode than in 2D mode.
No exact word on when the improved 3D technology will be officially released, but we hope to see previews of it in all its 3D glory soon.
Hmm, the timing of this (probably won’t be in phones until late 2011, at best?), plus the rumors that the next Nexus phone will be sporting an extra large display and 1280×720 resolution (source: ‘boy genius report’ and ‘android and me’) makes me wonder if perhaps this will be on the nexus 3?
Somehow I don’t think google would make their reference phone a 3d phone because so many people seem to be aggressively anti-3D, but I can dream, right?
