Newspaper Enterprise Tribune Co. Trying To Break Into Tablet Business, Will Possibly Offer Tablet For Free
It seems as if everyone is trying to get a piece of the tablet action these days. Now even newspaper publishing companies are tired of sitting idly by as the tablet business continues to boom. One of the largest newspaper enterprises here in the U.S. appears to be working on a touchscreen tablet of their own, designed specifically for their newspaper subscribers.
Just how big is the Tribune? In addition to owning 23 television stations, the Chicago based company owns various daily newspapers including the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, and the Baltimore Sun.
According to CNN, insiders close to the project report that the device is expected to run a modified version of Google’s operating system while housing newspaper software from the tablet owner’s hometown. Here’s the best part, the Tribune plans to offer the device for free, or at a highly subsidized price provided users subscribe to an extended subscription to one of the Tribune’s papers. A partner carrier might be part of the deal to offer a wireless data plan in conjunction with the tablet.
While the tablet project does not have a concrete production timetable yet, many close to the endeavor hope to see it succeed. If the Tribune is able to see the tablet to production and launch it successfully in its slated test markets of Chicago and Southern California, they could pave the way for a whole new demographic of tablet consumers.
The Tribune Co. has yet to make an official statement surrounding the tablet project. To read more coverage of the story continue on to the source link below.
