App Logs Allegedly Confirm iPhone 5 Will Be Dual Mode CDMA / GSM ‘World Phone’
While the rest of the world sifts through the outrageous amounts of Apple’s 5th-generation iPhone rumors, a source close to TechCrunch has provided information pulled from app registration logs that all but confirms a new device sporting both CDMA and GSM radios to be in testing now.
The tipster, an anonymous iOS developer, extracted information based on registrations that came from the same device that display mobile country codes and mobile network codes that support both AT&T and Verizon. Assuming the new device is the next-gen iPhone 5, this hardly comes as a shock as the iPhone 4 already has a Qualcomm dual mode chip with the GSM capability turned off. Additionally, now that Apple caters to both AT&T and Verizon, it seems only logical that the next step would be to combine support for both CDMA and GSM in a single ‘world phone’.
So, while this hardly serves up as earth shattering news for the highly anticipated iPhone 5, this does sound appealing for world travelers. A ‘world phone’ would enable users to travel and maintain their device connectivity between countries and networks with ease.
While this is great news for travelers, anyone who was hoping for a LTE device will be seemingly let down. If Apple does push forward with a dual-mode iPhone 5, then any plans of a LTE device will not be likely for this launch. The evidence appears to weigh heavy on the side of a dual-mode device rather than a LTE device, but we just never know what Steve Jobs and his Cupertino team have in store for us.
The next generation iPhone 5 is widely expected to launch in Q3 alongside iOS 5, Apple’s next mobile operating system.
