Nokia N9 with MeeGo OS now shipping in Europe
The first (and the last) MeeGo-based smartphone announced by Nokia is now available across Europe. Revealed initially in June, before Nokia’s marriage with Microsoft to develop Windows Phone devices, the N9 is all screen and no buttons as you can see from the picture above and is solely dependent on the touchscreen for any type of input, including a swipe to unlock the device. The device looks gorgeous though, thanks to this minimalist design, but once we get past that beauty, we’ll find features that aren’t really unheard of, except for may be the ability to pair with Bluetooth devices using NFC.
The N9 features a 1GHz processor, microUSB, aGPS, Bluetooth, HSDPA network support, TV out and WiFi. For photogs, the N9 will bring an 8mpx sensor that is capable of doing face detection and shoot at 720p videos – this isn’t new but Nokia is known for putting out devices that are particularly good at capturing photos and we assume that the N9 will fall in the same category. There’s also of course the NFC chip on board, with new ways to use the technology, like transferring levels between devices on the specially designed Angry Birds Magic game (preinstalled).
The Nokia N9 is available in three colors of black, cyan and magenta with 16GB or 64GB of onboard storage (explaining the absence of a microSD slot) and will cost 480 and 560 Euros respectively. The device is available across Europe, but will it ever make it to the North American shores? May be, may be not, but if it does, it will have a pretty hard time competing in a market already crowded by Android and iOS-based devices, we think. What you do you guys think? Will you be ready to put down $750 or so for a Nokia device with an operating system that is going nowhere?
