Microsoft Releasing Mango to All Windows Phone Devices, Regardless of Carrier

For anyone who was patiently waiting to get a taste of Microsoft’s sweet Mango upgrade, then this is the news you’ve probably been looking for. Microsoft announced yesterday in a blog post that Windows Phone 7.5, aka ‘Mango’ would be released to every phone, regardless of carrier.

Before you get too excited, there are three phones, including the Samsung Omnia 7, Dell Venue Pro and Samsung Focus, which will not be receiving the Mango update just yet. Microsoft did suggest that a firmware update could be available as early as next week. Continue reading for Microsoft’s complete blog post below.

Hello everyone. Yesterday we began delivering the Windows Phone 7.5 update to LG Optimus 7 phones on Telefonica in Spain.  We’re also now scheduling it for Samsung Omnia 7 phones on Deutsche Telekom.

In addition, we’re now delivering Mango to 100 percent of eligible phones around the world, regardless of carrier. (In other words, to everything that’s not listed as “scheduling” or “testing” on Where’s My Phone Update?).

As I mentioned last week, we’re also sending out “firmware” updates to some phones around the world, so don’t be surprised if you see another update notification pop up on your phone in the coming days. Firmware is software provided to us by handset makers that’s designed to do things like improve your phone’s performance, fix bugs, or even activate new features (if your phone hardware supports it). Not everybody will receive or require a firmware update: It all depends on your country, carrier, and phone model.

See you next week.
