MeeGo Comes Next Week, N900’s WILL Be Able to Install It
So a poster at Maemo.org who supposedly works for Nokia in their Maemo Devices department (AND he lives in Finland, doesn’t everyone in Finland work for Nokia?!) announced a little info in a forum where everyone was speculating on the launch of MeeGo on the 31st and whether their N900’s will run it.
Here is what he posted in response:
“Please set your expectations right for next week: nothing beautiful, stable or fully featured wil be released for handsets next week. 99% of you don’t want to install that release in your N900 and the rest probably have two devices or is used to reflash.Â
It’s a first code dump release, nothing else. It is very important from a platform development point of view, mildly interesting for application developers (because of the architecture announced, mainly) and nothing the average user or blogger will be interested playing with.
Dual boot will come at some point, or at least it’s in the plans. It’s clearly convenient for developers. The elegant solution implies patching the current Maemo 5 kernel and it is too late for PR 1.2. Maybe less elegant solutions are available before, maybe the elegant solution comes soon… We don’t know yet and currently we have other priorities. As said, not even for the average developer these first unstable releases are interesting enough to maintain a dual boot in their devices.” – Quim Gil, Nokia Maemo Devices
Translation? MeeGo WILL run on N900’s BUT the version that is coming out on the 31st will be a very basic version and not everything will work. It is meant for developers to use in order to create new apps, tweaks, and the like and he recommends average users do NOT use it.
He also goes on to say that Dual booting Maemo and MeeGo makes a lot of sense to Nokia as it definitely makes sense for Developers to have so that may come down the road (either in an official or not so official way) but right now it is not a priority.
Regardless of how alpha this release is, I’m definitely curious to see what the framework etc is like and what features (if we can access them) are left in or taken out. Will report when it comes out!
wait so this means that meego will go to N900 for sure? like officially? im talking about the future, all i need to kno its not like u have to be pro or phone developer to get meego to N900 rite? lol:D
Kevin,
The version coming out on the 31st is a very Alpha version (it is only meant for developers etc) so don’t get too excited yet. BUT that means that if they are using the N900 to test MeeGo, then the finished version of MeeGo will most likely run on the N900 as well 🙂 Don’t worry, we’ll do a How To Get MeeGo on your N900 🙂
hmmmmmmmmmmmm
i think updating to a new software is kind of hard. plus i really like Maemo 5 the only thing that really i need to see is sometimes i need to use the PHONE NOT IN LANDSCAPE MODE !!!!!!!!! like while i am driving ? how could i open my music player and start a song with one hand ??
thats really hard ?
i dont think nokia thinks about people who are GEEKS but also have normal life like me
!!!!!!!!!!
and about meego alfa ?? i think i will test as i am a very strong user i can reflash to maemo anytime i want
and for the end
i think nokia n900 had KILLED the iPhone 🙂
i am proud to be a nokia owner 🙂
