Windows Phone App of the Day: Golfshot GPS
Happy Father’s Day, Dad! I’m reviewing this exorbitantly expensive app in honor of you and the 112th US Open. Congrats to Webb Simpson on his victory this week. Always love to see an American player win…and Tiger Woods lose. Golfshot GPS boasts accolades of being the world’s #1 golf GPS app, and even at $20 a pop, I definitely believe at least a handful of golf nuts will agree.
Pros
- No subscription
- Access to over 38,000 professionally mapped courses from all over the world (full list at GolfShot.com/courses)
- Aerial views
- Distances at any point and accurate tracking
- PGA tour quality stats
- Keep score for up to eight players
- Handicap calculator
- Get fairway percentage, GIR, scrambling, sand saves, putting, and scoring averages
Cons
- Costs $19.99
- No free trial
How It Works
- Download from the “Sports” section of your Marketplace
- Open from your app list
- Search by name through the 38,000+ courses
- Input up to eight players per round
- Select your hole of choice and choose an aerial view by selecting “Aerial” at the bottom of your screen
- Select “Score” at the bottom of the same screen to view each player’s score on this hole
- View percentages of players who make the fairway or green or who shoot right or left on a particular hole
- View average number of pars made on each golf course or scroll right through the pivots to view scoring and chosen clubs
- View each players’ full score card by selecting their name
Conclusion
I am really annoyed that there is no free trial, and I can definitely see why some wives are really P.O’ed that their husbands are into golf, (insert nod to my stepmom!) but this is a great app for those golfers who take both the game and themselves very seriously. With access to so many courses around the world, accurate distance reads to fairways and greens, and club suggestions, Golfshot GPS will be well worth the money you’d give to a caddy to tell you the same stuff anyway. God, I wish I could remember my favorite Caddy Shack quote. Oh, well. Happy Father’s Day and US Open. y’all.
P.S. Major props to head honcho David Cogen for filling in for me yesterday. Did everyone like his post? Tweet @theunlockr to let us know what you thought. (No Twitter bullying…)
