Windows Phone App of the Day: Series Fan

Have I ever mentioned that I am obsessed with the show, “How I Met Your Mother?” Well, my roommate(s) and I are literally obsessed with it to the point of postponing watching the season finale just so the season will last longer. Also, if anyone can tell me how to watch season 7 without cable, I’ll be deeply appreciative. Anyway, Series Fan, released in February, allows you to manage all of your favorite TV shows and share info about what episodes you’re watching with your friends on Facebook and Twitter. Because, let’s be honest, you have way better taste in TV shows than your friends anyway.

Pros

  • Only $0.99
  • Free trial
  • Check into Miso to share what you’re watching on Facebook and Twitter
  • Provides overviews of series with the most unseen episodes and episodes you should catch up with
  • Offline support (Downloading new series and images, updating, and sharing require internet)
  • Miso support includes: see what your friends are watching, earn points and badges for checking in, share checkins on Facebook and Twitter

Cons

  • Trial version has maximum of eight credits
  • Can’t add series live tile to start screen

How It Works

  • Download from the “Music + Video” category of your Marketplace
  • Open from your app list
  • Select the “+” icon at the bottom of your screen to add new shows
  • Search by series title (i.e. “How I Met Your Mother”)
  • Select the “+” again to download series information
  • Click the back button; your selected show will appear on your “Series” list
  • Scroll right through the pivots to view upcoming episodes and catch up on your series
  • Click on a series title to view episodes, what’s next, the full list of seasons, and series information

Conclusion

So, this app didn’t really help me learn anything new about “How I Met Your Mother,” since I’m already an expert, but I am enjoying keeping track of the rest of my shows that I started watching after I quit my day job and took up chemistry class and bartending (and writing for TheUnlockr.com, of course!) The UI is ridiculously easy to use, and we all know how much I like apps that don’t do more than they claim to do. If you’re a fan of TV, or if you’re like me and don’t have cable, definitely grab this app. It’s worth the $0.99.
