XBMC Developers Plan to Launch a Full-Featured Android App, Geeks Rejoice
Xbox Media Center (XBMC) is an open source media streaming platform that has been keeping geeks like you and me very happy for quite some time now. After ten long years, the developers are prepping a full- featured Android app equipped with video and audio streaming in addition to a long list of other features. Unlike its remote or third party counterparts this app will launch with almost all of the features that its desktop version has. Here’s what the developer team had to say about their plans:
As for taking advantage of Android itself, we haven’t even scratched the surface. There are so many interesting features that we could take advantage of: launching apps, location awareness, speech recognition, on and on. Once the core port is finished up, you can bet we’ll be exploring many new avenues.
As expected, the app still needs work before the XBMC team feels comfortable to release it out into the wild masses. However, they will begin releasing apks for interested beta testers in the following weeks. Keeping with the open source spirit, for those of you who are eternally brave at heart, the source code is available now. Check out the preview video above and let us know what you think.
