How to Install ClockworkMod Recovery on the HCL ME U1

Most of the budgets devices that launch in the markets don’t see any custom development being done for them, but the HCL ME U1 is an exception. Despite being a ~$128 tablet and not so popular, it’s got a custom recovery port and that too the widely popular ClockworkMod Recovery. Users of the mentioned device rejoice as you now have the ability to flash custom ROMs and Mods, something you haven’t been able to do until the port became available. In this guide, we’re gonna walk you through the steps on how you can install ClockworkMod Recovery on your HCL ME U1 tablet. Here you go:

I. Before You Begin:

1. You must have done our How to Root the HCL ME U1 procedure.

2. Your device should have at least 60% of battery life left.

II. Downloading Required Files:

1. ClockworkMod Recovery

2. Terminal EmulatorQR Code (Google Play Link)

III. Installing ClockworkMod Recovery on the HCL ME U1:

1. Place the ClockworkMod Recovery archive onto your Desktop.

2. Extract files from the archive to your Desktop. You’ll get the actual recovery.img file.

3. Connect your device to your PC using the USB cable.

4. Copy the recovery.img file over to the root of your SD card.

5. Once copied, unplug your device from your PC.

6. Download and install the Terminal Emulator app on your device using the link provided above.

7. Once installed, launch it from your App Drawer.

8. Type in following command into the app:

dd if=/mnt/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p3

9. It’ll flash the recovery on your device.

10. Once it’s done, reboot your device.

11. You’re all set!

Excellent! You’ve successfully installed ClockworkMod Recovery on your HCL ME U1 tablet. You’re now all ready to enjoy those custom cooked ROMs available for your device!

  1. when entering the code, ‘dd if=/mnt/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p3’ getting the following error,

    no such file or directory

    NOW WHAT???? PLEASE HELP!!!

      1. it should be

        dd if=/mnt/sdcard/external_sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p3

        also remember to give “su” before this command

When i try to install terminal emulator, it said memory full and asked to uninstall some application to free up some space, when i tried for that the device keeps rebooting., So i’m stuck at this point. I’m unable to install Terminal emulator, only then i can flash the recovery image., and then the further procedure. Can you help me with this????

  3. Oops i forgot to add these information, My device is HCL me u1, i tried to root the device long time back, and installed google play store on it., But then all these problem started. So now i can’t reset my device ( either hard reset or soft reset )
    I can’t install or uninstall any application in it.
    As soon as i turn on the device i’ll keep getting a series of “unfortunately stopped” For a lot of applications.
    Wifi keeps dropping for every now and then.,

    Pretty much behaves like bricked one.,
