Google’s Unified Chat Dubbed “Babel” Is Headed to Android, iOS, Chrome, G+, and Gmail
Whispers of a Google unified chat platform have been blowing around these parts for the last few weeks, and now we finally have some details to sink our teeth into. Original reports suggested that the service, dubbed “Babel”, would merge services like Google Voice, Talk, and Google+ Messenger into one big cross-platform chat extraordinaire.
Now a new report from DroidLife has Babel to offer up a seamless messenger experience across Android, iOS, Chrome, Google+ and Gmail. No talk of Google Voice, but that doesn’t knock it out of the picture entirely. As of now, Babel is still going through the internal test period as a cross-platform service through Android, iOS, Chrome, Google+ and Gmail. Things could still change and we won’t know for sure what services it will tie together until Google makes the official reveal.
Google plans to feature the following highlights:
- Access the same conversation list from anywhere
- A new, conversation-based UI
- Advanced group conversations
- Ability to send pictures
- Improved notifications across devices
Outside of the cross platform’s potential, what’s got people really buzzing is why Google chose the name Babel. Could it be related to the Tower of Babel in its biblical sense, the Babel Fish, or even Babel the film starring Brad Pitt? Google is staying mum on the reasoning behind the name, so in the meantime share your theories with us in the comments below.
