How to Add Gesture Controls to Music in iOS 7 (Video)

If intuitive and effective enough, gesture controls can be better than old fashioned button tapping. There’s nothing wrong with taps, but gestures are a fresh and different way to control devices. Gesture Music Controls is a tweak that lets you control your music with gestures, and it works very well for $0.99 in Cydia. Follow the instructions and check out the video to become a swiper rather than a tapper.

I. Jailbreak your iPhone/iPad

To do this procedure you must be jailbroken. If you aren’t, you can head to our Jailbreak How To’s section and pick the jailbreak for your version of iOS (currently at the time of writing this is 7.0.4). Once done with that procedure and you have Cydia installed, head back here to continue.

II. Install Gesture Music Controls.

1. Open Cydia (if it isn’t still open from the section above).

2. Tap Search in the bottom right corner.

3. Type in Gesture Music Controls.

4. Tap on Gesture Music Controls when it shows up.

5. Tap Purchase in the top right and follow the prompts to login and purchase using your preferred method.

6. Tap Close when you’ve paid.

7. Tap Install in the top right corner.

8. Tap Confirm on the top right corner.

9. Tap Reboot Springboard, which will restart your phone.

III. Configure Gesture Music Controls

1. Tap Settings.

2. Scroll down and tap on Gesture Music Controls.

  • Select where you want gesture controls enabled on your phone.
  • Tap Animation Type to choose different animations that gestures create.
  • Tap Swipe Control to invert the swipe actions.
  • For Sharing, select whether you want a sharing menu to appear when you swipe up on the middle of the screen.
  • For Action Indicator, select whether or not you want the action symbols, such as pause and fast forward, to appear after completing a gesture.
  • Skip 15 Forward lets you long tap the right edge of the screen to skip 15 seconds forwards into a song. this works for going 15 seconds backwards when long tapping on the left edge of the screen.\

3. If you changed any of the default settings (all are enabled by default), swipe up and tap Respring to restart your device.

  • If you haven’t changed anything, just head over to your Music app.

IV. Use Gesture Music Controls

1. Go to the Music app.

2. Play a song.

  •  Tap the middle of where you see the artist name and song for pause and play.
  • Swipe left for back and right for next.
  • (Optional) Long tap the right edge of the screen to skip forwards 15 seconds, and do the same on the left edge of the screen to go back 15 seconds.
  • Swipe up in the middle of the screen to bring up a sharing menu.

Note

The gesture controls only work around the area where the artist and song names are located. This might seem a little tight, but it works to prevent accidental song skips.
