Android App of the Day: IMDb Movies & TV

I’m not a self-proclaimed movie buff, but I hate when my memory fails me and I see an actor that I just can’t place. Just last week I was watching The Lost Boys, and I could not for the life of me remember the character David’s name in real life. I knew that I had watched other shows with the same actor in them, but for the duration of The Lost Boys I was completely stumped. I got so hung up on my memory lapse that I actually picked up the phone to call my friend and together, after a lot of back and forth, we finally solved the mystery. It was none other than Keifer Sutherland. In situations like this, IMDb for Android would have been a life saver and would have saved me a lot of time. Thankfully, IMDb offers a host of other entertainment features that positions it to be a true must-have app.

Pros:

  • Search in database of over 2 million movie and TV titles
  • Search in database of over 4 million celebrities, actors, actresses, directors and other crew members
  • Rate movies and TV shows
  • View: Movie trailers, user reviews for movies and TV shows, critics reviews for movies and TV shows
  • Browse through movie quotes and trivia facts
  • Look up movie show times at local theaters
  • Search for TV listings for your local time zone
  • Search for recaps of TV shows from previous night
  • Look up upcoming movies
  • View entertainment news
  • Explore popular charts
  • Custom notification options available
Cons:
  • Minimal user settings available
  • No search filters available

How it works: When you open the app you are greeted by a search bar at the top, movie trailers, and the option to search by category. Categories include movies, TV shows, or by celebs. In my case I could have simply typed in “Lost Boys” into the search bar at the top and instantly The Lost Boys movie details appear. Details include a plot summary, trailer, top billed cast, all cast, and other related details to the film’s production. Within three taps I had found Keifer Sutherland’s entire bio, picture, his movie name “David”, and other films and TV shows he is well-known for in the industry. Boom, just like that I had my answer and a wealth of added information related to the movie. From the home page you can easily search for other things like local movie show times, search for shows directly on IMDB, or even browse movies by genre. I can’t say enough about how smooth the app’s interface is, the information is pulled instantly and even the colors of the app (black and gold) make you want to stay in the app a little while longer.

The app’s settings are minimal at best. There’s a language option, a country option for DVD & Blu-Ray region, and the option to clear your cache. It would be nice to have additional search filters for anyone who wants to optimize the app’s search potential. Overall though a small negative compared to everything the app has to offer.

Conclusion: IMDb for Android is a fantastic app for anyone who considers themselves a movie lover, movie buff, or anyone who loves entertainment related information. Or, if you’re like me, just the average person who couldn’t remember Keifer Sutherland’s name in The Lost Boys. The app’s interface is super fast, smooth, and extremely easy to get acclimated too. For free, this app is an absolute gem in my book.
