Apple iOS 5 Will Provide Built-In Earthquake Notifications For Users In Japan

It appears that Apple has found a useful way to alert Japanese iOS users of an impending earthquake with a new notification feature included right into iOS 5.  Apple’s newest mobile operating system, set to launch in the fall, will have a built-in earthquake notification which will be located at the bottom of the new notification center. The earthquake notification will receive information from the country’s official earthquake center, providing a person up to two minutes to prepare for a potential earthquake. While two minutes doesn’t seem like a lot, it could make all the difference in the wake of a natural disaster.

The built-in feature is expected to replace many third party apps that essentially attempt to accomplish the same thing. Apple does warn users that turning the option on will significantly drain the battery life of the device.

Many view the built-in feature as Apple’s display of compassion towards Japan following the 9.0 earthquake that created massive destruction on March 11th. Apple’s very own local iPad 2 launch was disrupted as a result of the earthquake, and forced various suppliers to shut down temporarily. The Sendai Apple Store also served as an emergency communications hub for the city, allowing citizens to use free Wi-Fi to communicate with loved ones during the crisis.
