Facebook Developing Flipboard Style Mobile Reading App?
What would Monday be without the familiar whisper of an industry rumor to wake us up. This one is coming from the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and has the Facebook team reportedly developing a mobile reading app.
According to the WSJ, the Facebook team has been diligently working over the last year on a dedicated story browser, internally dubbed “Reader”. The mobile app is rumoured to curate articles similar to how popular mobile reader app Flipboard does in their interface.
The report continues to detail that not only is Mark Zuckerberg overseeing the project closely, Facebook recently added hashtag support as a “first step” toward helping users track topics. Additionally, the company’s Graph API includes unused RSS code that could be potentially used for browsing story feeds.
While we can’t say 100% that you or I will ever see this Facebook powered mobile reading app come to life, we’re not saying it’s completely far fetched either. Considering Google is permanently shutting down their own Google Reader, this would come at an opportune time. If Facebook did release a mobile reading app would you ditch your current mobile reader for Zuckerberg’s new baby?
