Google Files Patent Application For New Device Lockscreen Interface, Adds Fuel To The Fire
Following a recent decision in German courts citing that Motorola is indeed infringing on Apple’s device unlocking patents, it appears that Google is forging ahead with their own device unlocking technology. The search giant recently sent in a patent application to the US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) titled, “Input to Locked Computing Device”, which relates to a device’s lockscreen interface. Essentially, Google is looking to offer various options or interchangeable options on the lockscreen that users would then be able to drag an option into a specific action at the bottom of the screen to unlock it.
Applying for the patent with the USPTO is just the first step before Google sees this technology into reality. Depending on the USPTO’s decision, Google just may be on their way to changing how we unlock our smartphones, tablets, and even computers in the distant future.
