Help Keep Jailbreaking Legal: Sign the Petition

It’s insane the amount of comments on here and my YouTube channel asking if (or straight up proclaiming) jailbreaking is illegal. Truth is, it isn’t. It was actually made legal by the FCC a few years ago so we can just stop that conversation right there.

Or can we…

Turns out the Copyright office will be holding a hearing on May 21st to discuss the legality of jailbreaking again. Jay Freeman, aka Saurik and creator of the Cydia store, will be in attendance to help explain why the practice should remain legal, but the rest of those interesting in keeping it legal can help as well by signing the EFF’s petition below.

Honestly, it makes sense, too. First, let’s quickly touch what jailbreaking is and isn’t, shall we?

Jailbreaking is the gaining of administrative rights on a device in order to remove system software, add custom software, gain access to system files that allow better customization, etc.

Jailbreaking is not a way of getting apps for free, condoning piracy or theft in anyway, etc. Once you jailbreak you can then use whatever software you want, and what you do with that new-found freedom is up to you –the act of jailbreaking itself should not be help responsible for the few people that might using it to do other nefarious things. In the same way that the internet allows you to do an amazing array of things, it can also be used for less than amazing things, but that’s up to the user, not the ability to access the internet. No?

Think about it. You paid for your device (the manufacturer made their money on you already), if you want to load software the manufacturer didn’t expect or remove the software they were paid to put on the device that you didn’t approve of, why shouldn’t you be able to?

Anyway, I clearly am biased on the matter as I’m someone who enjoys the freedom jailbreaking provides me (have you seen these tweaks?!) so I’ve signed the petition already. If you feel similarly, why not sign it, too.

Thoughts on jailbreaking as a whole? Leave them below.
