Honeycomb-running Sony S1 Android tablet on the horizon?

There were already rumors doing the rounds in February about Sony’s foray into the Android tablet market, but this latest update from the company’s own top exec seems to add further truth to the hearsay.  Howard Stringer, Sony’s CEO, has gone on the record to Nikkei that not only is there such a device but it will be released before the summer runs out.  As for its specs, the CEO didn’t reveal much but the rumor mill (thanks to engadget) has provided us a list already and it’s pretty impressive:

  • 9.4-inch multitouch display with 1280×800 resolution
  • Customized version of Honeycomb
  • Tegra 2 CPU
  • Front/rear cameras
  • USB media device support via USB port
  • IR port
  • Playstation Certified with Sony PSOne games preloaded
  • Bravia Media Remote
  • Access to Qriocity

For a device that’s only been talked about, the wealth of revealed info is surprising but we are not the ones to complain.  The USB port and IR port should set this apart from the current crop of tablets but again, we are just high on grapevine and we’ll confirm the news to you when we know more.
