I’m sure we all remember the fiasco that was Apple being called out for intentionally limiting older iPhone performance based on how the battery was functioning (and the bigger problem of not telling anyone). If you aren’t familiar though, iPhone CPU throttling is when the device’s operating system intentionally limits, or throttles, the CPU performance (and thereby the speed at which the device can function).
Following the discovery that Apple was doing this to devices without users knowing, they said they would release a way to turn off this CPU throttling in a future update. Turns out that that update is iOS 11.3.
In iOS 11.3, Apple has added a battery health option that allows you to see the current state of your battery’s health and see whether or not the OS is intentionally limiting the performance because of it. If it is, you can then easily disable the CPU limiting and get your full performance back (Apple does warn that this can cause unexpected shutdowns, which is what they were trying to avoid by imposing the limit in the first place, by the way).
Update to iOS 11.3
To remove the CPU throttling on your iPhone, first, you need to update to iOS 11.3 if you haven’t already.
1. Head to Settings.
2. Tap on General.
3. Tap on System Update and check for the update.
4. Tap Install and wait for it to install when it shows up (also keep in mind 11.3 is only available for the iPhone 6 and newer).
Disable Apple’s iPhone CPU Throttling
Once the device is updated and reboots, we can then actually disable the throttling.
1. Head to Settings.
2. Tap on Battery.
3. Tap on Battery Health and if your battery is at 100% it will simply show you that at the top and that it all you’ll be able to do in this section. If it is below 100%, it’ll give you notification that performance monitoring has been enabled.
4. If performance monitoring is enabled, you can then tap the (admittedly tiny) disable link at the bottom.
Now, Apple says that the limiting only happens when the battery performance is below 100% and an unexpected shutdown has occurred already and that if you turn it off it will re-enable itself after another one of these unexpected shutdowns occurs again. So you will have to disable it again if that does happen (and continue to do so every time).
