How to Flash a Custom Recovery on the Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 (YP-G70)

Installing custom recovery endows your device with features like flashing a custom ROM, making backups, clearing/wiping cache, etc., features that are not usually available on stock ROMs.  Of these custom recoveries, ClockworkMod Recovery (developed by Koushik Dutta) is the most popular and we’ll show you in the guide below how to get that recovery on to your Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0.

I.  Before You Begin

1.  You need to be rooted before you can flash custom recovery on your device.  If you aren’t already, use our guide to do this.

2.  Make sure that you have at least 75% of your device charged before you begin.

3.  Back up anything you feel is needed just in case.

II.  Necessary Downloads

1.  Odin 1.85.rar

2.  YP-G70-Kernel-r14.tar [Link available in the Download section of this post, Odin version]

III.  Installing ClockworkMod Recovery on the Galaxy Player 5.0

1.  Power down your device.

2.  Extract the Odin 1.85.rar file you downloaded above to a folder on your desktop.

5.  From the extracted folder, double-click on Odin3 v1.85.exe to run the tool.

6.  Click on PDA button, locate YP-G70-Kernel-r14.tar and click on OK to load it on Odin.

7.  Connect the PC end of your USB cable to your PC.  Now, hold the Volume Down button on your device and connect the other end of the USB cable to your device.  Your device will enter Download Mode and Odin should now recognize your device and light up the ID:COM field yellow to signify this.  If not, reinstall the proper drivers and try again.

8.  Make sure that the Re-Partition and Flash Lock are unchecked; this is important as you might brick your device if these options are ticked!

9.  Click on Start.

Once the device reboots, you should have ClockworkMod Recovery installed on your Galaxy Player 5.0.

  1. Where do I install the drivers. Odin is not seeing my Galaxy Player 5.0 in the ID:COM slot when it is in download mode.

    1. Spencer – See my post directly below yours. It sounds like you may have the same problem. Hopefully, the answer will be the same!

    1. Is it stuck on the Samsung logo screen, or is it showing that screen, shutting down, and booting back into the logo screen. If the former, you need to research how to remove the battery from your device (ensuring that the device is then shut down completely), and then start again. If the latter, a condition called (I believe) a “boot loop”, simply hold the power button until the device powers down, and then start again. For either of these conditions, search for information and videos on the web. I didn’t think there was a way to take the battery out of the YP-G70 Galaxy Player 5.0, but I did find a YouTube video which was very helpful.

Also remember, that on the US model, the “Selection” button prior to the install of the ClockWorkMod Recovery is the “Home” button, not the power button as suggested by many of the folks on the web. It becomes the power button after the install.

    1. Are your Serial ports enabled on your PC? They should be by default, I believe, but you never know. You should check that.

  2. I have tried multiple times AND Cannot make Odin3 v.1.38 recognize my Samsung YP-G70. I have the latest version of the Samsung USB Mobile drivers on my Samsung laptop. Can anyone help me?

    1. I Found My Answer!
After trying for a couple of weeks to accomplish the task, I finally read one set of instructions that told me the following about the Samsung Mobile USB Drivers.

I needed to: 1 – Uninstall the old drivers
      2 – REBOOT
3 – Install the latest drivers
      4 – REBOOT

After following that sequence of steps, the Odin3 program connected with my YP-G70 in Download Mode without issue.

Good Luck to all with your problems!

      Gerra
