HTC Evo 3D Firmware Update Says Goodbye to Carrier IQ Software
Much to the delight of numerous concerned Sprint users, the latest update for the HTC Evo 3D handset has removed the controversial Carrier IQ software. The update comes as no surprise, as Sprint had released an earlier statement confirming that they would no longer use the app. As a result of the update the HTC IQAgent and IQRD apps are now showing up as 0KB in the Manage Applications screen. As the software can currently be found on 17 additional Sprint handsets, this may be the first step in many to come for Sprint in an effort to back away from Carrier IQ .
For anyone not familiar with Carrier IQ, the software collects information on call drops and data signal failures, with the official reason for its existence being to “ensure better customer service and troubleshooting of handset issues”. Customer concerns stemmed from HTC’s specific use of the app in regards to collecting key strokes and data content that passed through Carrier IQ’s software.
As it appears Sprint is making strides to remove Carrier IQ, we wonder if additional carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile will follow in their footsteps.
