HTC Hero Skipping Android 1.6 Going Straight to 2.0
A reader of ours sent us what HTC sent him regarding the 1.6 Donut update for the HTC Hero. It goes as follows:
“Dear HTC customer,
Thank you for contacting our Customer Support Center. We are dedicated to providing you with the best quality service and answering all of your questions and concerns.
The Hero will not be receiving the Android 1.6 upgrade, it will however get the 2.0 one. Do note however that we do not have a confirmed release date for this upgrade, all I can recommend at the moment is that you keep yourself updated by visiting our website regularly as the latest information will be available to view from there.
Best regards,
HTC customer support team
HTC Corp. Global Service Division”
Basically, since 2.0 is coming out so soon apparently, HTC is just going to work on their Sense UI for 2.0 instead of making it twice, which kinda makes sense to me judging by how soon 2.0 seems to be coming out. With the all new tweaks in 2.0, I’d assume HTC would have to do start a lot of their Sense UI customizing from scratch, so no point in doing that twice, right?
This also would explain why the Verizon Eris (Hero) and Sprint Hero come with 1.5 and not 1.6. HTC never started on 1.6 because they probably heard about 2.0 before they began.
So now the question is, when will 2.0 be out for the Hero…
THANKS XIKEON!
Ummmmm… but there is a ROM floating around Android developers showing Hero on a 1.6 firmware…. Called the HTC Dragon or something…?
I don’t know what that is about then… =/
Christopher Chavez,
Doesn’t mean that devs wont make a custom ROM with 1.6, just that HTC won’t make an official one is all.
I think you can bet that HTC has been working on 2.0 for a while now. I’m sure Google seeds all their hardware manufacturers with development builds long before they ever go public.
P.S. Look up HTC ‘Rosie’ UI. My theory is that this is actually 2.0 underneath.
Actually, HTC has released a new Android phone with 1.6 in Hong Kong called Tattoo, which the phone’s back cover can be replaced with choices of 600 from the Web. Check this link http://www.htc.com/hk-tc/
DriverX66,
We’re familiar with the Tattoo, a really nice mid range Android device for people that just are getting into Android. Had no clue there were so many back covers for it though, nice! Thanks!
